What Sam Burgess has said about a potential move for Wigan prop
SAM Burgess has admitted his interest in adding Liam Byrne to his Warrington Wolves squad.
The Ireland international, who has helped the Warriors win the past two Super League titles, is out of contract at the end of 2025 and under new rules, he has been able to speak to rival clubs about a move since December.
As such, The Wire have made their move and with the likes of Paul Vaughan, Zane Musgrove and Jordy Crowther approaching the end of their deals, his signing could be the start of a middle-unit refresh if confirmed.
While nothing official has been forthcoming from either side as of yet, Burgess admitted he “would be lying” if he said Byrne’s name had not at least been mentioned as a potential addition to his squad.
“I like Liam and I think he offers a lot,” he said.
“It’s the nature of the beast – at this time of year, everyone becomes available so you’ve got to think about what’s in the market.
“I like him as a player and I think he’s got a lot to offer, so I’d be lying if I said we hadn’t looked at him.
“He’s got a lot going for him – I don’t want to put too much pressure on him with the situation but he’s done everything in the game.
“He’s done a great deal in his young career and he’s got a lot of potential left in him.
“He’s a quality player and we’re always interested in those.”
