The excitement of the new year brought a buzz to Ladybridge FC, where the Primary School League kicked off its first week back after the Christmas break.

This week’s action saw 10 exciting games, showcasing the rising talent from schools across the area, including St Maxentius, The Oaks, and Sacred Heart, among others - and it turned out to be a night full of upsets.

Several teams found themselves dropping points when least expected, with some of the top sides struggling to match the high standards they had set in previous matches.

One of the standout performers on the night was George Bradley from St Maxentius Primary School. The young defender demonstrated exceptional skill and composure while playing out from the back, something not often seen at such a young age. His ability to read the game and play with both confidence and precision set him apart. Bradley’s skilful distribution from defence helped his team to maintain possession and build attacks from the back, a style of play that impressed both spectators and coaches alike. He truly showcased what it means to have vision and technique at such an early stage in his football career.

Another player who shone in this opening round of fixtures was Joe Gilberson, from The Oaks. As the team’s captain, Gilberson led by example, inspiring his team-mates with a combination of leadership and determination throughout. His work rate was second to none, and his passion for the game was evident in every minute he spent on the pitch. Gilberson’s ability to motivate and encourage his team, especially during challenging moments, proved crucial in ensuring they stayed focused and gave their best effort. His leadership and drive are qualities that will undoubtedly serve him well as he continues to grow as a footballer.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the evening came courtesy of Miles Neilds, from Sacred Heart Primary School. Neilds provided what can only be described as the goal of the evening, striking an absolute thunderbolt that flew past the opposition goalkeeper to seal a late victory for Sacred Heart. The strike was a brilliant combination of technique and power, catching everyone off guard and leaving the crowd in awe. The goal not only secured the win for Sacred Heart, but also highlighted Neilds’ potential to be one of the standout players in this season’s league. His match-winning goal was the perfect cap to an exciting evening of football.

The fixtures themselves were packed with excitement from start to finish, with each game showcasing different styles of play and incredible efforts from all players involved.

While the night belonged to the individual performances of Bradley, Gilberson, and Neilds, it was clear every team was giving their all and striving to improve with every match.

For the children involved, the league offers an opportunity to shine and build lasting memories. They look forward to the competition week after week, eager to represent their schools and show what they can do.

It’s clear that for many, playing in this league is a highlight of their school year, and the sense of camaraderie and excitement that surrounds each fixture is contagious. Teachers, parents, and players alike are all eager to see how the league develops throughout the season, and the passion that the children bring to the field makes every match a thrilling experience.

As the league continues, more young talents are sure to emerge, bringing even more excitement.
