I saw 3 new options emerge for Liverpool at the ideal time for Arne Slot
Arne Slot and his players have generally looked to play down suggestions that they are the best team in the world at the moment. But with the evidence continuing to grow, it might not be possible for much longer.
Top of the Premier League and the Champions League and still with a 100 percent record in the latter competition, Liverpool is in a position that everyone else in the world would swap for. And yet, there are still a number of ways in which the Reds can improve.
Harvey Elliott, coming on at half-time, was the match-winner against Lille, and he looked bright throughout the second half. The Liverpool No. 19 buzzed around with some strong running and it was his speculative shot that led to the second goal.

With few appearances under his belt this season so far, Elliott has come off the bench a couple of times to make an impact now. Against Brentford, he got an assist and a so-called pre-assist. On Tuesday night, he was the man who got the winning strike.
While he might never secure a series of starts in the team before the season is out, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones vying for the same role in the team, Elliott could not have been more definitive when it comes to his future. He wants to stay and fight for his place, and there are worse positions to be in than being a super-sub for your boyhood club — not least one battling for four trophies.
Federico Chiesa, too, looked sharp. He could have scored when he forced a good save from Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, and there were multiple moments where he was effective on the dribble.
The Italian has barely made an impact at Liverpool so far since his transfer from Juventus in the summer but he isn't going anywhere either, and he could still have a substantial part to play. Like Elliott, even if that is almost exclusively from the bench, it could still be decisive. Soccer is about moments, as Darwin Nunez proved last weekend.
Meanwhile, this was comfortably Jarell Quansah's best performance this season as well. With Joe Gomez still "weeks" away from making a return and Ibrahima Konate's fitness needing to be managed, it was timely.
Virgil van Dijk is capable of playing every minute, but that would not be sensible. As a result, all the available options will need to be called upon — and that means trusting Quansah.
Lille forward Jonathan David has as many goals in Europe this season as Harry Kane and Viktor Gyokeres, but he was kept almost silent throughout. The Canadian did beat Alisson Becker in the second half with the one chance he had, but Quansah was certainly not to blame.
It is a cliche, but each of Elliott, Chiesa, and Quansah could be like new signings for Liverpool in the second half of the season, given that they have hardly featured in the first few months. If they carry on their improvements and continue to make a difference either from the start or off the bench, they can definitely be much more involved than they have been up to now.
That doesn't change the fact that there are emerging transfer needs at left-back, holding midfield and number nine at Anfield, but it could still be a huge boost as Slot bids for multiple trophies. Three more stars look ready and capable of stepping up.
