Ruben Amorim has suggested it was a mistake to bill this Manchester United side as the worst in the club's history.

Amorim dubbed the current United side "maybe the worst in the club's history" after they lost their tenth Premier League game of the season against Brighton.

United have won only five of Amorim's 15 games in charge and lost seven since he was appointed in November. United have two victories in ten league fixtures under the Portuguese.

Ahead of United's Europa League home match against Rangers, Amorim was asked to elaborate on his comments on Sunday. "First of all, I want to talk about that: I was talking more for myself than for my players. Because I was talking that and you have a coach who starts out losing seven games in the first ten.

"So it’s more for me. I was talking more about me than the players. I also talk in the same response about I was not helping my players and if you look around every time I speak - and I speak a lot - every time you push about the players are not good enough I never put the spot on my players.

"So I understand I give you that headline and I am frustrated sometimes. Sometimes I should not say it in that terms but it is what it is and that’s it. Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration in the moment.

"But the good thing is I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room five minutes before. The response was quite normal because I’m really blunt with my players. They trained well, they are ready for this game and let’s see tomorrow.

"I’m not taking responsibility for the players. What I’m saying is that the message you guys show is I was putting it on the players. What I was saying is you have to look really hard for a Manchester United team that has lost seven out of ten games and that is on me. Because it’s the same players doing worse with a new coach, that is my only concern in the moment.

"I am not taking anything from the players, what I’m saying is we have to improve in the details, I explain that. The way we play, we are too nervous with the ball, too nervous, really anxious. And then if you have limited experience in this game, when you follow in this type of context, it’s really hard to go up, especially in a massive club. That was my only point.

"Was it the best point to do it after that loss? Maybe not. It is what it is, I’m like that all the time. I'm not taking responsibility from the players. I am saying I am really, really direct in things. I’m saying in this moment we are performing really bad and our results are really bad in the moment.

"It is everything together, the players, the staff, the technical staff, so I am not taking responsibility. I’m just pointing out that I am the biggest responsible for the performance and the results because I am the coach and I have that responsibility."

Amorim's predecessor, Erik ten Hag, became infamous for his sound bites in press conferences. Ten Hag often claimed United were "in the right direction" despite the team's decline whereas Amorim has described his rhetoric as "blunt".

The 39-year-old stressed it was more instructive to be honest than delusional. "I didn’t say I was nervous, I said the team was nervous. I was frustrated. Frustrated is different from nervous.

"If you [ask is it] good for the players to see the coach frustrated? Maybe not. But it’s always we. I’m saying the obvious. If you want, I can be delusional and say different things. I say it as I saw it.

"I said to the players and I said to you I think it’s a good thing to be really honest with you if you want me to say different things. You saw one thing, I saw one thing, and I tell you a different thing, I can start to do it, it’s easier for me.

"What I’m saying is that - and they know - you can understand the game, if you are in the stadium, you can understand it. So let’s face it and work on it. But I’m not nervous."

Amorim usually avoids a post-match debrief in the dressing room and waits until the following morning, but was so angry with United's 3-1 loss to Brighton he accidentally smashed a television. That was a "mistake".

"I’m a young guy and sometimes I make a mistake," he explained, "and that’s why I don’t talk after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake and then I get more nervous and go to the conference really nervous and you say things I shouldn’t say, that’s it.

"Sometimes I’m a young guy and I make mistakes. I don’t promise you I won’t do it again but I will try to improve."

United play their penultimate Europa League league match against Rangers on Thursday evening. Four points from their two remaining fixtures against the Scottish side and FCSB would ensure a top eight finish, securing automatic qualification for the round-of-16.

In three of their past five home fixtures, United have conceded in the first five minutes to Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Brighton. Amorim is adamant United have to score first against Rangers.

"I could say different things and say no, no, it’s the same thing, we have the support of the fans," he added. "No, we are more nervous playing at home than away.

"We lost four games in five, so it’s getting harder. But we can improve. If we don’t suffer the first goal like in the fourth minute, tenth minute or 15th minute, it’s really hard to calm down the team.

"The first thing in my mind is they cannot score. We need to score the first one. If we score the first one I think that will change and we will improve. It is really clear.

"We are really anxious, especially playing at home, we suffer goals and it’s really hard. It’s getting harder for everyone to play at Old Trafford.

"The most important thing is we can improve right away in the next match and the football can change like that. We can have a lot of ideas like in thinking that it’s getting worse for that reason or another reason.

"Imagine that tomorrow we don’t suffer a goal in the beginning and we score and we play well and we go to Fulham and we can win it. That can change, even the environment here and everything.

"What I knew since the first day when I arrived and I see it, I understood changing things, we are going to suffer, is really clear. It's getting really hard and you guys are here for a long time. You get loss after loss, is really hard for everybody,

"I know that, I show that frustration but I don’t know. Maybe we can change that tomorrow."
