Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick, has continued in the footsteps of his father by winning a race in Formula 3 for the first time, and he did it on the same track that his father grabbed his maiden Formula 1 win.

It is also the track where Schumacher senior made his debut in Formula 1, 27 years ago, at the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. For Mick, success has been harder to come by as he took the chequered flag on what was his 45th attempt.

Schumacher Jr said after the race, “It seems Spa is a good place for the Schumacher family.”

In a feat that would impress his father, he claimed victory after starting in sixth, and despite a coming together with another car in the first lap. The race took place in a downpour, recalling the skill of Michael Schumacher in the wet. Mick acknowledged the similarities, saying: “I do believe that I have that in my genes.”

Michael Schumacher is still recovering after a serious injury to his head when skiing in the French Alps in 2013, with only limited disclosure over his health and prognosis.
