Former Hull FC forward Scott Taylor outlined his pride after Goole Vikings’ historic Challenge Cup victory over London Broncos on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings overturned a 10-0 deficit to win 17-10 in the capital in what was their first competitive outing as a professional rugby league club.

Granted entry into the League 1 competition this year, the Vikings are gearing up for their first season in the sport’s third tier. However, they now have a third-round cup tie to prepare for first, hosting Super League outfit Wakefield Trinity next month.

And Taylor, who joined the Vikings as head coach last autumn, believes the win is a just reward for a lot of hard work, with the club, which has been an amateur operation in the Yorkshire Men’s League for the last few years, providing one of the best stories of the second round, which also saw wins for community clubs West Hull, York Acorn, and Wests Warriors to set up ties against top-flight opposition in St Helens, Hull FC, and Leeds Rhinos.

Speaking after the game, Taylor, who won three Challenge Cup medals as a player—two with Hull and one with Wigan—said: "It’s a really proud day for everyone associated with the club and the town and a reward for all the hard work that has gone in on and off the field over the last few months.

"To come away with a win like that against a side that played in Super League last season was fantastic and brilliant for everyone involved. We couldn’t be more proud of the boys."

Taylor continued: "It is really pleasing to come from behind in the way we did—it’s a testament to the character of the boys. They all really stepped up to the plate and gave it their all. Every player put in a performance and did the badge proud. It was a genuine team effort all around."

After trailing 10-0, Goole hit back through Tom Halliday before second-half tries for Thomas Minns and McKenzie Harman. Reece Dean added three goals and a drop goal, with Taylor thanking the Vikings fans who made the trip down to London and who will now taste a Super League opponent at the Victoria Pleasure Ground in the next round.

"It was great to see the fans come down from Goole—it’s fantastic support for a new club," he added. "That wasn’t lost on the staff and the players either. It’s really appreciated by everyone.

"To hear about all the fans back home tuning in too, it’s just great for the club and the town—hopefully, we made them proud. Fingers crossed, we get a few down to watch us play our home games this year."
