"There's a decent footballer in there but he needs to play regularly and be able to change games more consistently."

Ask any Celtic fan about Sead Haksabanovic, and most would agree with the above assessment. The Montenegro winger is due back at Parkhead this summer as he approaches the end of an underwhelming season-long loan stint with Stoke City.

After moaning about his lack of minutes in Glasgow, Brendan Rodgers wasted no time farming out the 24-year-old to the English Championship back in September. And with just one goal and two assists, Haksabanovic has done little to prove he merits a future with the Hoops - or indeed the Potters.

Football Scotland asked Peter Smith, Stoke City reporter for Stoke-on-Trent Live, for the down-low on Haksabanovic's spell at the bet365 Stadium - and the report card doesn't make for great reading.

1) Were you excited when Sead Haksabanovic first signed on a season-long loan?

"I don't think anyone from a Stoke perspective was thinking that this was going to be a deal which changed the season. But there were 18 other signings last summer too, including two others on the day Haksbanovic joined, so there wasn't as much concentration on each individual arrival as there might have been in other windows.

"What Stoke really needed were goals and assists and Haksabanovic's record didn't suggest he was going to be prolific on that front. There was hope that he could influence matches in the Championship and help break down teams which sat deeper, particularly at home.

"He said the right things, bringing up his friendship with former Stoke favourite Marko Arnautovic. Anyone who joins with Arnie's blessing has a head start with supporters."

2) He played frequently at the start, contributing a goal and assist before falling away. What happened?

"Yeah, he probably had his best performances in away games in September and October, wins at Bristol City and Middlesbrough and a draw with Huddersfield.

"I remember interviewing him around that time and we spoke about the minutes he was getting compared to what he'd had at Celtic and the risk that would bring in terms of his body. He hadn't started a couple of games in a row since the previous September but in the Championship Stoke had a run of six in 18 days. Sure enough, he started picking up niggles and he hasn't been able to put together a run of matches, even if his form had merited selection.

"He did enough to impress Steven Schumacher during the last international break to be brought back in and he played well in a win at Hull but he hasn't been able to hold onto his shirt and has been in and out of the treatment room again."

3) Overall, what do the fans think of him and has there been a clamour for him to play more often?

"He's not someone who is getting singled out for criticism but he will have wanted to make more of an impact. There was a game a couple of weeks ago against West Brom which probably summed up his time. He was generally neat and tidy but he didn't have a clinical edge to really make it count and his Celtic mate Mikey Johnston was ruthless going the other way."

4) Has he had any particular standout moments or, given his numbers this season, has he simply not done enough?

"The bottom line is the numbers. Stoke moved for Haksabanovic because they desperately needed goals and they are in the same position now. They have conceded fewer than a couple of teams in the play-off spots but have only scored more than three other teams, averaging one a game.

"And he hasn't been able to change Stoke's record at home, which was Alex Neil's big plan. Stoke have only won seven matches at the bet365 Stadium this season and he hasn't featured in any of them. He has played his part in five of Stoke's seven away wins though."

5) Out of 10, how would you rate Sead Haksabanovic's time at Stoke City and would you like to sign him permanently?

"I'm continually knocking about numbers in my head at the moment ready for Stoke's end of season report card. It feels like Haksabanovic is probably going to end up with a 5 or 5.5. There have been some decent away days but this hasn't been a clever season for Stoke. On an individual level it's probably been forgettable rather than dreadful. There's a decent footballer in there but he needs to play regularly and be able to change games more consistently.

"Hopefully his year in the Championship has been useful in his development and he'll go with best wishes which is more than quite a few of Stoke's signings over the last few years have got."
