A second meeting will take place to decide whether Liverpool and Manchester United's Premier League fixture can go ahead today.

A safety group meeting was held at 9am to determine whether the match is safe to go ahead. The decision has been deferred and a second meeting will take place at midday.

The match is currently on and there are no issues with the pitch at Anfield but the group will reconvene later this morning to discuss the safety of access for supporters and staff.

Pictures taken outside Anfield show plenty of snow and slush has settled and the forecast for Liverpool today is constant rain or sleet.

The match safety group will consider the conditions around the stadium and whether rain will melt the snow. The local transport situation will also be factored into the decision-making process.

Liverpool said in a statement: "A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield.

"At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.

"We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds."

The Merseyside derby at Goodison Park was postponed last month due to the heavy winds caused by Storm Darragh.

United had matches away to Chelsea and Blackpool postponed in December 2010 due to snowfall in the UK.
