Watford have agreed that Ken Sema is free to leave the club during January if the right opportunity comes along for him.

The 31-year-old Swedish international last played as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw at Plymouth on November 22, and has not even been on the bench since the 1-0 win over Bristol City four days later.

Sema has made 14 league appearances this season, but only four of them have been from the start and he has averaged less than 37 minutes per Championship outing.

While much emphasis is rightly placed on who the club might bring in, Tom Cleverley is keen to ensure that should Sema leave, it is handled properly.

“We’ve all agreed that Ken would be free to go,” he explained.

“That’s if he has the right opportunity. If he doesn’t, then he’ll have a level playing field to fight for his spot here.

“He is a great professional and has been a great servant to Watford, and I feel like if we do part ways then it should be done in a classy manner because Ken has been such a good servant.

“If we don’t then he is a good enough professional to have around the place to be good for the environment but also bring some qualities to the squad.”

Dubbed King Ken by the fans, the Swede has always been a popular figure with supporters.

Sema joined Watford from Ostersund in the summer of 2018 and has made 176 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.

There was no fresh news today in terms of incoming players,

“We’re not the only club that will do most of its business in the last week of the window,” said Cleverley.

“I’m expecting bodies through the door and maybe a couple going the other way.

“I think it’s really important now, seeing how the introduction of Abankwah and Dele-Bashiru has given us the benefit of fresh minds and fresh legs.

“They had an impact on the squad at the weekend and we could do with a couple more.”
