Sensational Steven Gerrard Rangers return 'wouldn't surprise' Ibrox legend as he gets major warning over next move
Rangers strike legend Ally McCoist admits he wouldn’t be shocked if Steven Gerrard made a sensational return to Ibrox.
The England and Liverpool legend is weighing up his next managerial move after the axe fell on a disappointing spell in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard started life as a top level boss at Rangers and earned legendary status by winning their first title in a decade which earned him a move to the Premier League with Aston Villa. McCoist admits the 44-year-old’s next move has to be carefully considered, comparing it to his old Three Lions team-mate Frank Lampard who is back in the dug-out at Coventry City and has made an impressive start at the Sky Blues.
McCoist, who had three years himself as Rangers manager, told talkSPORT BET: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox. He’s obviously held in really high regard by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next job is going to be vitally important for him. Things haven’t gone according to plan for him after he left Rangers.
"A little bit like Frank Lampard going to Coventry – his next appointment was really important to him as well, so we’ll see what Steven ends up choosing to do with his career.
“At this moment in time however, the majority of Rangers fans have accepted that Philippe Clement has been given the backing of the board.
"In fairness to him, there’s been a steady improvement in performances and results – they did really well to finish in the top eight of the Europa League table, particularly given the strength of some of the teams that they played.
“Having said that, some of the performances away from home have been completely unacceptable. They’ve been really poor in some games.”
