Sergio Conceicao levels Mikel Arteta accusation after past Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel clashes

Sergio Conceicao levels Mikel Arteta accusation after past Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel clashes

Tuesday night against Arsenal was not the first time that Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao has clashed with his opposite number in the Champions League.

Conceicao refused to go quietly, as the drama continued until the end of a fractious night at the Emirates Stadium.

He accused Mikel Arteta of insulting his family in Spanish after the managers had been involved in a heated confrontation after the final whistle.

Speaking through a UEFA interpreter in his post-match press conference, Conceicao said: “During the game and towards the bench [Arteta], in Spanish — I don’t know if this is to do with Spanish managers — he insulted my family.”

Arteta had already held his press briefing by then and had refused to comment on his spat with Conceicao, but Arsenal sources insist their manager strongly denies the accusation.

Conceicao also clashed with Kai Havertz in his technical area during the game and he has previous for taking issue with rival managers.

In 2020, he accused Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola of using “ugly words” following a group- stage game at the Etihad Stadium.

Then, in 2021, he accused then-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel of insulting him when the Blues knocked out Porto at the quarter-final stage.

Conceicao’s antics on Tuesday night will not have come as a surprise to anyone in Portugal, where they are used to him losing his cool.

The 49-year-old has received a staggering total of more than 20 red cards as a manager.

In August, he was sent off as Porto lost to rivals Benfica in the Portuguese Super Cup and took four minutes to leave the dugout.

His row with Arteta on Tuesday night was a major talking point, but Arsenal will not let it overshadow what was, arguably, their biggest night in years.
