Seven summer targets that Newcastle United could revisit in January
With the January transfer window now open, attentions at Newcastle United has turned turned towards potential targets.
Eddie Howe only brought in five players over the summer as PSR rules hampered the club's business. Lewis Hall made his move permanent, after activating his obligation to buy clause, as well as Odysseas Vlachodimos, Will Osula, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy coming through the door.
Newcastle had a number of targets in the summer that didn't work out. However, January could provide the platform to bring in the players in order to strengthen the squad.

So, who could join the Magpies this winter? ChronicleLive takes a look at seven targets from the summer that Eddie Howe could make a January move for...
Marc Guehi
Guehi was the club's primary summer target as the club submitted a £60 million bid that was rejected. Interest is still high for the England defender, who scored an own goal as Newcastle drew to Crystal Palace at the end of November.
The 24-year-old has yet to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park as he angles for a move to a Champions League side. With 18-months left on his contract, Crystal Palace may look to cash in on the centre-back in January.
Rumours have continued to persist since the summer and could continue throughout January. Howe expressed his admiration for the defender.
"It is very difficult to comment too deeply (on Guehi)," Howe told ChronicleLive. "Marc is somebody we respect. He is a very good player."
Anthony Elanga
Newcastle tried to lure Elanga to St James' Park twice during the summer. He was first included in the swap deal that included Elliott Anderson, which eventually saw Vlachodimos make the move from Nottingham.
The winger was also subject of a bid just before deadline day. However, sporting director Paul Mitchell pulled the plug on the deal as he did not want to overpay for the player.
Elanga has been involved regularly in the Premier League this season as Nottingham Forest have enjoyed. their league adventure. He is also the international teammate of Alexander Isak, but has not played for Sweden since September.
"The environment in Nottingham is good.," the 22-year-old told Fotboll Skanalen earlier this season. "It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest.
Edmond Tapsoba
In August, Newcastle identified Tapsoba as someone to bring in after the Guehi deal stalled. Nothing seemed to materialise from the links and Howe eventually went without a centre-back.
The defender was a part of Bayer Leverkusen's invincibles last season as they strolled to the Bundesliga title. Tapsoba also played his part in his side's DFB Pokal victory and Europa League run, which ended in a defeat to Atalanta in the final.
Whilst it would still take a big offer to lure the 25-year-old away from the Bay Arena, Leverkusen are a little way off the top of the table. With rumours of manager Xabi Alonso leaving at the end of the season, it could allow for Tapsoba to make the move to the North East of England.
Malick Thiaw
Thiaw was one of the numerous centra-back that was on the list from Newcastle United in the summer. AC Milan valued the German at €35 (£30) million.
The 23-year-old has established himself in the middle of the back-line after an injury earlier this season.. He also scored in Milan's 3-1 Champions League victory against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, with the Rossoneri a way off the top of the Serie A table, it could open up a possible January move for the three-time Germany international. Thiaw's contract runs until 2027.
Joe Gomez
Alongside Tapsoba and Thiaw, Gomez has also been a part of the defensive shortlist should Guehi continue to stay at Crystal Palace. The Liverpool defender seemed to not be in Arne Slot's plans at the start of the season.
However, the England man has provided cover at centre-back for Ibrahima Konate. He has covered at right-back as well, should Trent Alexander-Arnold or Connor Bradley be unavailable.
Despite this, Gomez is still not a regular and has only made sporadic appearances this term. £45 million was the reported price tag for the 27-year-old in the summer.
Eberechi Eze
Eze has been a person of interest for Newcastle United for a while - even going back to Steve Bruce's tenure at the club. That interest was renewed in the summer with the Crystal Palace man in high demand.
The south London side have struggled in the Premier League this season. Eze hasn't quite hit the heights for Palace and had a few weeks out with an injury before returning against the Magpies at the end of November.
If Howe wants to add to their attacking midfield options, the 26-year-old will demand a fairly high fee. It would likely come down to him or Guehi if the Magpies are determined to sign someone from Selhurst Park.
Bryan Mbeumo
Newcastle look to be after an attacking midfielder when the January transfer window opens. As last season came to an end, Mbeumo was a target but no deal could be done.
Brentford are enjoying life in the premier League so far this campaign. Mbeumo is one of the reasons why as he has stepped up following the departure of former Magpie Ivan Toney in August.
The winger is enjoying his football at the Gtech Community Stadium and would possibly need some convincing to make the move. However, Mbeumo could be one of the best options out there.
