Shane Lowry joked the drinks were on Rory McIlroy after both men hit a hole-in-one in the opening round of the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

McIlroy was first up as his wedge on the 119-yard par three 15th hole flew straight into the cup without touching the sides in what was only his second ever hole-in-one on the PGA Tour.

Lowry though wasn't to be outdone and followed his Ryder Cup teammate in achieving a similar feat on the 7th.

Tradition dictates that anyone scoring an ace at one of these tournaments sets up some complimentary drinks for the media personnel.

McIlroy and Lowry duly obliged with a cooler of beers including bottles of Amstel and Guinness being provided for the press pack.

The journalists were grateful to the duo with the Read The Line X account tweeting a photo of the drinks with the message: "A tradition like no other… thx Shane & Rory!"

Offaly man Lowry couldn't resist taking a cheeky pop at his good pal McIlroy as he replied: "Chuck it on Rory's tab."

There is a $20m prize purse up for grabs at Pebble Beach with the winner walking away with $3.8m.
