Shea Charles could be staying Sheffield just days after his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday was announced to be coming to an end.

The Northern Ireland international made a big impression during his time at Hillsborough so much so that his parent club Southampton recalled him from the Owls, with the 21-year-old set to make a final appearance for the club on Wednesday night.

But it seems Charles could be set for another move away from St Mary's with Wednesday's city rivals keen to bolster their squad ahead of a promotion push in the second half of the season.

Initial reports linking Charles with a move to Brammall Lane were suggested to be some sort of a wind up against their bitter rivals but Blades boss Chris Wilder said that was not the case with the midfielder ticking all the boxes in what they are looking for in midfield.

“We know a lot about him, I know his agent really well, he’s a local boy, and have done for 20/30 years,” the SUFC manager told The Star.

“He’s got players, other clubs have got players. He’s a player we identified in the summer, as we have to because we’re all doing their jobs, whether that’s us or Sheffield Wednesday. That wasn’t a wind-up, even though I get it and people thought it might have been.

“We’ll see where we go in the next week but a combative central midfielder, who can get about the park and break the game up and play, is on our radar. And there are a lot of players who fit that bill.”

There is still an outside chance Charles remains with the Owls. He played in Sunday's defeat to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and is set to play his final game for the club against Bristol City on Wednesday. Wednesday are keen to keep the player at Hillsborough, but it seems he may be staying in the city one way or another.
