Sheehan on return from injury and 'disappointing' Cambridge display
Josh Sheehan was pleased to get back on the pitch after a spell on the sidelines – but admitted that Wanderers’ performance was “not good enough” against Cambridge.
The Welsh international came off the bench for the final 15 minutes – his first appearance since the start of December – as the Whites found a late equaliser through Zeno Ibsen Rossi’s own goal.
“It’s not good enough really from our point of view,” Sheehan reflected. “We knew what type of team Cambridge were going to be coming here.
“To give them a goal so early – and even to get back into the game and then give them a goal straight away - is disappointing from our part because we knew what they were about.
“We just knew if we could play our game, make sure we dominated and create more chances as we go forward then we would win. But we gave ourselves a mountain to climb.”
He added: “We are conceding too many sloppy goals. We can have the possession but if they go and have one shot and one goal, then we are just giving ourselves a big mountain to climb.
“We have always based ourselves on not conceding and then we know our quality as a team - because we have got some good players - we will create chances and score. That is what we have to do going forward.”
The atmosphere turned sour after the early opener as supporters voiced their frustrations from the stands.
“It is tough because some players might have never experienced any animosity in their career, so it is a learning curve for some players,” the 29-year-old explained.
“I think, for us, you just kind of have to ignore the noise. It is not that simple obviously, but I think the leaders in the group need to lead and - the older ones, like me - we need to lead on the pitch.
“I need to get the game going and get us playing, and I feel like that is my job and other players.
“We have got leaders all through the team and we have got to show it on the pitch really, from minute one, and not give teams a leg up.”
Despite the frustration of more points dropped in League One, Sheehan was glad to be back in the thick of the action after a frustrating spell out of action with a hamstring issue.
“It has been a long few weeks watching,” he said. “It has been frustrating. I hate watching, it is not nice sitting in the stands watching.
“I'm glad I could get on the pitch and we scored. I feel good, I have been training for the last two weeks so I didn't want to rush it.
“Obviously, it is one of those injuries you don't want to rush because you can be out again. I think it has been best for me to make sure I was (recovering) for the whole time they told me so that I’m ready to go now.”
