Manchester United stars past and present have gathered at Manchester Cathedral to pay their final respects to Denis Law.

The United legend, who won two league titles with the Old Trafford club and was a member of their European Cup-winning team under Sir Matt Busby in 1968 when they became the first English club to lift the trophy, died at the age of 84 in January, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia in August 2021.

Law’s funeral took place in Manchester today, with the cortege leaving Old Trafford before making its way to Manchester Cathedral for a service. Among those in attendance at Manchester Cathedral were Sir Alex Ferguson, Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney and Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Former United players Paul Scholes, John O'Shea, Brian Kidd, Bryan Robson, Sammy McIlroy, Nicky Butt and Arthur Albiston also attended to pay their respects to Law, won the Ballon d’Or in 1964 – the only Scottish player to do so – and claimed 55 caps for his country.

George Best's son, Callum, was also in attendance, along with Ruben Amorim, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Darren Fletcher. While Dion Dublin, Eddie Gray, Sir Kenny Dalglish and TV presenter Eamonn Holmes were also among those seen arriving for the service.

Paying tribute to Law, former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said ahead of the service: “I feel very lucky that I got to know him a bit. What a man. What a character. What a personality he was.

“In later life we both did jobs at Manchester United and I was very fortunate to do a couple of jobs with him. How many statues are there around Old Trafford? He has two. Only the king gets two."

In a tribute last month, Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Law as the 'greatest Scottish player of all time' and described him as the 'cornerstone' of United’s success.

He said: “He was the best Scottish player of all time. He was a fantastic player and an incredible human being.

“The great thing is that he did not use his fame, he was so level-headed and down to earth and we are talking about a guy who had all of these caps for Scotland and is called the ‘King of Old Trafford’.

“It is an interesting thing because why did they call him the King? You had guys like George Best, Bobby Charlton – the greatest English player of all time and a fantastic player for our club – and they called Denis ‘the King’.

“It was something to do with the determination and the will to win every time he went on that football field. He was a really competitive human being and it was a natural thing for the supporters to associate with him as their King.

“I went to see him a couple of months ago and he was not doing well. When he joined us, he turned the club around and that is the greatest thing he could have done.

“Sir Matt was recovering from the Munich Air Disaster and they won their first trophy in 1963, shortly after they signed Denis. He was so vital to the renovation of the team. He was a cornerstone of the club’s future success.”
