Sir Kenny Dalglish has given his thoughts on Mohamed Salah as speculation continues over the Egyptian’s future at Liverpool.

As things stand, Salah’s contract will expire at the end of the season, with the 32-year-old one of three big names in that position along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. All three players are now able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs if they wish to do so, with Alexander-Arnold in particular the subject of intense interest from Real Madrid.

There are no such strong suggestions that Salah is being lined up for a move, although there is still plenty of speculation surrounding his future. Recent reports suggested he was on the verge of signing a new three-year deal at Anfield, although Salah poured cold water on those reports following last weekend’s win over West Ham.

Liverpool may therefore be facing up to losing one of its modern day legends. If that is the case, he would leave with the praise of perhaps the club’s greatest ever player ringing in his ears.

“It’s been a fantastic career, and he’s made a great contribution to Liverpool Football Club. Everybody is happy with the contribution he’s made, and he’ll be happy himself,” Dalglish told SportsBoom.com.

“At this moment in time he's a Liverpool footballer. He's playing in the first eleven, he's made contributions. And he’s made positive contributions [too]. So, whatever happens, happens. But there's no one who can take away from the fact that he's had a great career at Liverpool.”

Dalglish’s comments come after Jamie Carragher claimed earlier this week that Salah may be drawing closer to the Scot and Steven Gerrard in the club’s list of legends.

The former defender has previously placed Salah among Liverpool’s top five greatest players, but with the winger in sensational form this season and looking to guide the Reds to another league title - and potentially eyeing up a Ballon d’Or - Carragher now believes he could even lay claim to being the club’s greatest.

“A few weeks ago I said he is in the top five players to ever play for Liverpool. I think if he takes Liverpool to a title and ends up with the Premier League, PFA [Player of the Year Award], which if he wins it, will be the third time he has won it, which has never happened before. No-one has ever done that before,” the ex-defender said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“If he does that, he’s not in the top five, it’s basically a fight between him, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard to see who is Liverpool’s greatest-ever player. If he can add that to what he’s already done at Liverpool, he leaves an Ian Rush or Graeme Souness behind and joins those two who most Liverpool fans debate and argue about as the greatest player to ever play for Liverpool.”
