Six Nations table 2024: Final standings and results
Ireland were crowned 2024 Six Nations champions on Super Saturday as England settled for third place.
Andy Farrell’s table-toppers hosted Scotland in Dublin in the middle match knowing that a defeat without bonus points would potentially open up the door to England, who travelled to Lyon in the final match looking to build on their stunning last-gasp upset of Ireland last weekend that denied the Men in Green the chance at a historic second successive Grand Slam.
Ireland knew they would retain their title and take all the drama out of the final day by just avoiding a first home defeat by Scotland since 2010 at the Aviva Stadium, while a loss would also have been enough if they picked up two bonus points - or very likely even one - in the process. They held on to win 17-13 and break a stiff Scottish resistance, claiming their sixth title of the Six Nations era.
That may well have resulted in a drab affair down in Lyon but it was anything but a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’, with the lead changing hands multiple times during a thrilling contest.
In the end, it was France who secured the victory after Thomas Ramos kicked a penalty in the final minute to claim a 33-31 win - although England’s two bonus points ensured they finished third and above Scotland.
Super Saturday kicked off when Wales hosted Italy in Cardiff in a scrap for the wooden spoon, with the Dragons winless and bottom of the table following a home by defeat France in round four in which they were eventually blown away after a thrilling first half.
The Azzurri had suffered the ignominy of sixth place every year since 2015, though have new-found confidence under Gonzalo Quesada after stunning Scotland and so nearly winning in France. Wales, meanwhile, had not finished winless in the Six Nations since all the way back in 2003.
However, they have now after an incredibly disappointing 24-21 loss that marked a sad end to the international career of George North, who was injured late on his Test farewell.
