Six Nations and WRU agree new rules for Principality Stadium roof to end years of rows
The Principality Stadium roof will be closed for Wales' Six Nations clashes against England and Ireland after a change of protocol.
Warren Gatland has long voiced his opinion the roof should be shut for big games but previous Six Nations protocols meant the away team effectively had the deciding vote. This meant when certain sides were more comfortable playing in the rain they would opt for the roof to be open, leading to numerous "roof rows" over the years.
In Rugby World Cup events and the Olympics the protocol has been for the roof to remain shut. The Six Nations has now changed its protocols meaning its default position is for the Principality Stadium roof to also be shut, no matter what the away team want.

“There’s no better atmosphere than a packed-out Principality Stadium roaring Wales along," said Principality Stadium manager Mark Williams. “In the past we’ve always come to a mutual agreement with the visiting team on whether the roof remains open or shut but in this historic move we’re maximising one of our greatest assets and the roof will be closed for the next two years of international Welsh rugby fixtures.
“When the roof is shut, the noise is intimidating. Its fantastic for both the fans and players." Wales have sold-out both their home fixtures in the Six Nations against Ireland and England, respectively.
Gatland's side face Ireland on February 22 (2.15pm) and England on March 15 (4.45pm). “Selling out both of our home fixtures is an achievement reflective of the excitement building ahead of another thrilling Guinness Six Nations campaign at the world renowned Principality Stadium," said WRU CEO Abi Tierney.
“Both senior men’s home fixtures have been in high demand and this is a fantastic achievement and a sign of the passion and belief that Welsh rugby fans have for this team. Principality Stadium is one of the most iconic sporting venues in the world and our retractable roof, one of our most distinctive features, enables us to create an amazing atmosphere with the the match day experience set to come alive during the2025 Six Nations.”
