Sky Sports' punditry team believe Lucas Bergvall was fortunate to avoid a red card during Wednesday's game.

Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal after Bergvall, 18, scored an 86th minute winner for the Londoners. The Reds will have the chance to avenge that result in the second leg at Anfield on February 6.

Bergvall's goal was controversial, as he made a poor challenge on Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas just before. Many believe the teenager, who was booked earlier in the game, should've received a second yellow card from referee Stuart Attwell.

Furthermore, Liverpool was down to 10 players when Bergvall scored due to Tsimikas needing treatment. Attwell's failure to dismiss the Bergvall left Liverpool's players furious, with captain Virgil van Dijk sharing his anger live on Sky Sports.

And Sky Sports pundits Michael Dawson, Izzy Christiansen, and Jamie Redknapp all believe Bergvall should've seen red. Former Tottenham star Dawson said: "If Stuart Attwell gets the first one right he puts himself in a position.

"I don't think the first one is a yellow card. He gives him an opportunity and a decision to make. The second should have been a yellow card. If you get one right and one wrong you can't even it up."

Ex-women's soccer star Christiansen added: "The second one is worse than the first one. It doesn't make sense."

Former Liverpool captain Redknapp continued: "It has a monumental effect on the rest of the game. He has to come off for treatment and that leaves Liverpool with 10 men. So not only do you still have Bergvall on the pitch but Liverpool have to play with 10 men. But Spurs certainly make it count."

Van Dijk was asked about the incident after the game. He said: "I think it was quite obviously that it was going to be a second yellow. Obviously think it was pretty clear (what I said to the referee). It was no coincidence then a minute later he scores the winner.

"But it is what it is. He made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. It was quite obvious I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow. There is a linesman there, a fourth official. There is VAR there and a referee, and he doesn't get a second yellow. I'm not saying this is the reason we lost today, but it was a big moment in the game."
