Northern Superchargers’ Rachel Slater is quickly ticking things off her to-do list and a full season in The Hundred is next to be done, writes Sportsbeat's Milly McEvoy.

The 20-year-old was drafted in as an injury replacement, playing in the Superchargers defeat to Southern Brave, before signing her first domestic contract last year.

Slater is one of two Northern Diamonds players funded by Yorkshire outside of the six contracts the ECB provides to each of the eight women’s regional teams.

“I was quite surprised to be involved,” Slater explains “Obviously, I went in halfway through the tournament, but it was, more than I expected, it was better and bigger than expected.

“I was happy just to be there last year, but now I've had a full season under my belt; I thought it was like a real goal for me to be in the main squad.

“Full credit to Yorkshire I think we've funded two this year more than any other region or county, so it's nice to know that they're behind you and to see action as opposed to just hearing people say it.

“If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have a professional contract this year. I'd recently left school, so I was working as a personal trainer, and doing cricket coaching as well.

“I think I always had the intention within five years that I would want to have a professional contract, but I didn't really expect it to happen so quickly.

“It was nice and obviously, just being able to focus all my time on my cricket and not having to work around it, as you can imagine it's just a game changer.”

Slater also made her debut for Scotland earlier this year, the New York-born Yorkshire woman qualifying for the Wildcats through her mother.

And family is where her cricket journey started, inspired by her dad and brother, although she insists her, and her two triplet siblings were never too competitive.

The medium-pace bowler was speaking at the launch of KP Snacks’ summer cricket roadshow at The Black Prince Trust in Oval. KP Snacks are the Official Team Partner of The Hundred and are on a mission to inspire more families to get active through cricket by bringing a pop-up experience on a nationwide tour of the country.

She added: “My route in was pretty much like this, just through family and being around it with my brothers.

“It's good to see loads of families down here and people of different ages. It's not just kids, it's mothers and dads bringing their kids on and trying to get involved, which is positive.

“And I think that's been something good about The Hundred is that kind of family environment about it. I was similar just through family and with my brothers.”
