Sloppy Chelsea punished as Celtic stroll to victory in pre-season friendly
Chelsea 1 Celtic 4
Enzo Maresca’s slow start to life as Chelsea head coach continued with a heavy defeat to Celtic in a pre-season friendly in Indiana.
Chelsea’s defensive vulnerability was ruthlessly exploited by Celtic, who are two weeks ahead of the west Londoners in their pre-season preparations and looked the sharper side.
Matt O’Riley nonchalantly passed the Scottich champions ahead before making the second goal for Kyogo Furuhashi. Celtic got behind Chelsea’s defence at will in the first half and would have scored more but for the goalkeeping of Robert Sanchez.
The Premier League side dominated the second half and created multiple chances, only to concede two cheap goals in the space of four minutes. Benoit Badiashile tried to play out from the back but gave the ball straight to Luis Palma to score the third. Palma then released Mikey Johnston to poke the fourth.
Christopher Nkunku’s late penalty, awarded for a foul on the lively substitute Raheem Sterling, was a consolation of sorts. Chelsea did some good things in attack but the ease with which Celtic exposed their defence suggests there is plenty of work for Maresca to do.

FT: Chelsea 1 Celtic 4
All over at Notre Dame Stadium. Celtic were sharper and more ruthless than Chelsea, who are still learning how Enzo Maresca wants them to play. They were decent in attack, and could easily have scored four themselves, but their defending needs work.

Sanchez comes 20 yards out of his goal and then telegraphs a driven pass that is cut out by the stretching O’Riley. The ball ricochets to Kyogo (I think), who scoots past Sanchez but goes too wide for a shot. That was almost a calamity for Sanchez, who isn’t good enough on the ball to satisfy Enzo Maresca.

Celtic are a fortnight ahead of Chelsea in their pre-season preparations and it showed during the first half in Indiana. Matt O’Riley scored a classy opening goal and made the second for Kyogo Furuhashi. Although Chelsea were pretty good in attack, Celtic got behind Cthem on numerous occasions.

A bit of a lull. Enzo Maresca might be slightly concerned at how easily Celtic have played through Chelsea, but it’s a pre-season game, so you know.
Reece James, in central midfield, pings a sweet strike from 25 yards that is blocked.

Celtic play through Chelsea for the second time. Maeda’s cross shot has the sting taken out of it by James and Fofana completes the clearance.

Good save! Mudryk’s chip takes a deflection and loops towards Nkunku eight yards out. His powerful header across goal is pushed away dramatically by the diving Schmeichel.

Chelsea are having plenty of the ball, the way Maresca likes it. It looks like Reece James is playing the hybrid role: part right-back, part central midfielder.
09:10 PM BST
1 min: Chelsea 0 Celtic 0
Chelsea kick off from left to right as we watch. Reece James has again started in midfield in a 3-2-4-1 formation.
Chukwuemeka is put through by Guiu after only 12 seconds, but he overruns the ball slightly and that allows Taylor to slide in and concede a corner.

Here come the players
It’s 30 degrees in Indiana but all the Chelsea players are rocking tracksuit tops. Scott Brown would surely approve.

The match should be under way by now. It isn’t, though I’ve no idea why. Pre-season sluggishness maybe.

Chelsea still adjusting to new style under Enzo Maresca
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the pre-season friendly between Chelsea and Celtic at the Notre Dame University Stadium. Chelsea are starting again, again, this time under their new Italian manager Enzo Maresca. He’s a disciple of Pep Guardiola and, like Pep, he’s not for turning – or lumping it.
Chelsea’s desire to play out from the back was a factor in both the goals they conceded in a 2-2 draw with Wrexham earlier in the week. But Maresca is interested in the long-term rewards, not the risks. “For sure, we are going to concede goals this season playing out from the back,” he said. “Hopefully, not too many. It is one of the risks that you have trying to build from behind.
“I think you are going to concede in different ways, so you need to decide in which way you need to concede a goal. Sometimes teams that try to build from the back concede goals but I think you are going to score more than you concede.”
Maresca said he was happy with the performance of Robert Sanchez, who is expected to start again tonight – but Sanchez isn’t the best with the ball at his feet and the BBC are reporting that Chelsea have agreed a deal for the Villarreal keeper Filip Jorgensen as well as the teenage Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino. While Anselmino will return to Boca on loan, it looks like Jorgensen will be the first-choice keeper.
That’s for the future, as is the tricky prospect of Enzo Fernandez’s return to the squad next week. Tonight is about playing football and playing out from the back, whatever the consequences.
Kick off is at 9pm.
