Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said Manchester United might not win the league this season but they still have to think about “winning trophies.”

The Red Devils’ boss has spoken of United being behind where he hoped they would be in their development in recent weeks and that he was building his side for next season.

But after a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle on Boxing Day, the Norwegian told Amazon Prime Video that silverware has to be in their sights in the months ahead.

We can’t wait for next season,” the 46-year-old Norwegian said. “I said it last week that we are building for next year because we are not going to win the league this year.

“But we need to think about winning trophies this year. That is different.”

United will face Manchester City in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup next month and are through to the last 32 of the Europa League where they will face Club Brugge.

They are also now just four points off Chelsea who occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot in the Premier League after defeating Newcastle.

“Today was a good day for us, we made it comfortable,” Solskjaer said after watching Anthony Martial (twice), Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford fire United to victory over the Magpies.

“I think that’s one of the big things from today, the pressing.

“We need to be pressing high with a lot of intensity and then the opposition will make mistakes.

“The players bounced back really well today [after defeat at Watford last weekend]. So let’s see how they cope with probably some praise now and then there’s a game in 48 hours against Burnley away.”

Solskjaer’s contentment contrasted sharply with the frustration felt by Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce, who told Amazon Prime Video that too many mistakes had cost his side.

“When you come here, the one thing you can’t do is gift Manchester United.

“I know it’s Christmas, but we’ve given away more goals today than we have in three months. It’s a harsh lesson for us.

“We’ve gifted them a goal to start with and with two or three goals we should be doing better. All of a sudden the game’s away from you.

“It was a tough afternoon for us.”
