These teams met on Jan. 12 with South Carolina winning 67-50 in Columbia. Texas star Madison Booker was bothered to a 3-for-19 shooting performance and the Longhorns made just one 3-pointer. Sania Feagin had six blocks for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks lead the country in both strength of schedule and simple rating on Basketball Reference. They are walking all over their conference matchups — Dawn Staley’s squad is shooting 48.1 percent and SEC opponents just 33.6, with an average point differential of 24.1.
Freshman Joyce Edwards is a reliable inside scorer and a gifted playmaker. Program legend and reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson said Edwards is already playing with a pro’s IQ.
It’s a balanced and deep South Carolina outfit. The two leading scorers come off the bench, with Edwards joining sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley. Tessa Johnson adds dynamite 3-point shooting with the second unit and starting forward Chloe Kitts is a force on the offensive glass.
Texas is a title contender in its own right. Vic Schaefer’s Longhorns are second on the aforementioned simple rating system.
Madison Booker is truly balling out for her sophomore season for the Longhorns, markedly more efficient than last year’s All-American effort. She scored her 1,000th career point in Thursday’s demolition of Vanderbilt. Sixth-year forward Taylor Jones is a disruptive shot blocker. Meanwhile, senior Rori Harmon is averaging 2.5 steals per game.

’s Sabreena Merchant currently has South Carolina guard Te-Hina Paopao going eighth to the Connecticut Sun in her latest 2025 WNBA mock draft:
“The Sun have needs up and down the roster, and the best player available here (at least, domestically) is Te-Hina Paopao, a combo guard who is a lights-out shooter and has added a steady diet of floaters this season. She’s also become a good defender since transferring to South Carolina and has plenty of big-game experience playing for the defending national champs.”
