Southampton manager Ivan Juric says he does not expect Cameron Archer to leave for Leeds United before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Saints have rebuffed an approach for Archer from Leeds, who have admired the striker for a number of windows and will continue to monitor the situation for the final days of this transfer window. However, the Whites are not raising their hopes of a deal given Southampton’s current stance.

And now Juric says he believes Archer - his club’s top scorer with five goals in 25 matches - will stay at St Mary's beyond transfer deadline day. Speaking in a press conference, the Southampton manager said: “I think Cameron is a very good player and a great guy. For him, we’ve changed the style of game a little bit and maybe he’s suffered a little bit.

“But he is working really hard to understand what I want from him. We will see in these [coming] days. I don't think something will happen. He will stay with us and we will work with him, I think so.”

Leeds boss Daniel Farke has kept the door open for a striker arrival in the final days of the window with Patrick Bamford still sidelined with a hamstring injury and United otherwise being one injury away from having only one fit centre-forward.

Speaking at Thorp Arch on Thursday, Farke said: “I trust my players and whoever plays for us, if it’s Joel [Piroe], Patrick or Mateo [Joseph]. Whoever starts also up front I would back him to score goals. I don't think it's necessary to have six or seven options there.

"We have ongoing injury problems with Patrick. We have two fit striker options there and if one is injured then it would be difficult to have one available - this is why I spoke about hoping Patrick is back really soon.

"He’s in the final stages of rehab, but we also have to stay awake in the transfer market. Again due to the situation with Patrick and we are ambitious, we are having a deeper look at what is possible.”
