Southampton react as commentator bizarrely hits out at Newcastle United 'gift' from ref
Ivan Juric has claimed Newcastle United should 'never' have been given a penalty against his Southampton side.
Southampton were in front when Bruno Guimaraes threaded a ball through to Alexander Isak midway through the first half. Just as Isak was about to pull the trigger, Joe Aribo stuck out a leg and the Newcastle striker went down inside the box.
Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes and Isak all appealed for a penalty, but referee Samuel Barrott initially gave Newcastle a corner. However, following a VAR check, Barrott was ordered to consult his pitchside monitor and the official reversed his decision and pointed to the spot.

Eddie Howe felt it was a penalty because of the way Isak 'went down' and the Newcastle boss cited it as a 'good example of VAR working really well'. The Premier League match centre even explained how VAR deemed 'there was sufficient contact for a penalty and recommended an on-field review'.
Efan Ekoku, who was co-commentating on the game, disagreed and repeatedly called it a 'poor decision'. The former Wimbledon defender even suggested that Newcastle had been 'gifted' a spot-kick because it had not been a 'clear and obvious error'. Juric also felt hard done by even if the consensus was that it was the right call.
"Watch it back now, it wasn't a penalty," the Southampton boss said following his side's 3-1 defeat. "Joel Aribo is in front of Isak and, for me, this moment can never be a penalty. For me, it's a foul for us because he's in front of the ball."
