James Ward-Prowse hailed Southampton’s ‘special’ 2-1 win against relegation rivals Watford on Saturday.

Ismaila Sarr had handed Watford the lead in a comfortable and assured first-half by the visitors.

But Danny Ings inspired Southampton to a quick turnaround, bagging from close range in the 78th minute before Ward-Prowse struck five minutes later to seal the three points for Southampton.

And the win proved the Saints’ first home win of the season and the midfielder believes those three points can help them earn more points at St Mary’s.

“It has been spoken about in the dressing room, everyone was desperate,” he told Sky Sports. “In the past we have been successful because we win our home games.

“It was a special performance from everyone.

“With us, we’ve got a great belief in what we’re doing. You saw that against Arsenal. To come here tonight, the pressure was on, it was a home game, a relegation battle and we’ve come away with three points.

“It could be a real big week for us.”

Ward-Prowse added the ‘massive win’ kick-starts what the hosts believe is a ‘really key period’ in the season.

The late show from the home side saw them move up to 18th place in the league and stay within two points of Everton - who currently sit precariously in 17th.

Former Liverpool and Burnley striker Ings, who acted as the catalyst for the turnaround, added the performance showed what the Saints can do as they seek to survive the drop this season.

“Massive,” the 27-year-old added. “It has been a very tough week for everybody. To go 1-0 down tonight and win the game like that shows character.

“We’re all together, everyone, the fans, it was great towards the end. Thoroughly deserved by the end.

“I could sense something coming from us, you could see us getting on top of them. Helped the team towards the win, and Ward-Prowse doing what he does. A great night for us.”
