Southampton 0-1 Man United LIVE! Fernandes goal - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Southampton vs Manchester United - LIVE!

A second-half strike from Bruno Fernandes was enough to give Manchester United a 1-0 win at Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, ending their run of seven straight away defeats. It means manager Erik ten Hag has earned back-to-back victories as the club climb to sixth ahead of the 3pm kick-offs.

The first half was lacking in chances, beyond a goalmouth scramble which Southampton somehow survived. United finally found the opener through Bruno Fernandes, who fired a low, right-footed shot past Gavin Bazunu from the centre of the penalty area.

New United signing Casemiro started on the bench but was given 10 minutes for his debut to help his new team see out the result. Cristiano Ronaldo also came on late, but had little impact. Captain Harry Maguire stayed on the bench as Lisandro Martinez was named man of the match. Relive the game back with Standard Sport below...

Southampton vs Man United highlights

  • GOAL! Fernandes with the opener!

Southampton FC 0 - 1 Manchester United FC

Bruno to BT Sport

14:37 , Alex Young

Bruno Fernandes admits Manchester United had to suffer during their 1-0 win at Southampton.

We knew playing at Southampton is not easy. We have experienced that already. We did a great game, we know sometimes you have to suffer. Well done to us, great job. It’s a massive three points for us.

It’s important, one win doesn’t win the league, two wins doesn’t win the league. We have to carry on for the rest of the season. This is what this club demands. All the players know that, after Liverpool everyone could feel it.

We set the standard so we have to carry on and go with this standard and, if we can, improve it.

Full-time!

OFF THE LINE!

14:20 , Alex Young

94min: Southampton denied at the death, Mara with an overhead kick!

14:17 , Alex Young

92min: Fred on for Eriksen.

14:16 , Alex Young

91min: Six minutes added on.

14:15 , Alex Young

89min: Perraud is on, returning from injury. McTominay looks like he will be OK to continue, which it certainly didn’t look like being the case at first.

14:13 , Alex Young

87min: Oh dear, this does not look good for McTominay. A twisted knee and he’s down.

14:10 , Alex Young

84min: United look pretty comfortable, as we head into the final five minutes, even with Southampton enjoying plenty of possession.

14:03 , Alex Young

79min: Casemiro is on for his debut.

14:02 , Alex Young

75min: Ronaldo down and receiving treatment. He’s not seen too much of the ball since coming on.

13:58 , Alex Young

72min: Southampton still really pushing here. They’ve had a few penalty shouts turned down as they weasel the ball into the area and try to force the issue.

13:54 , Alex Young

68min: Ronaldo is on. Sancho makes way.

13:52 , Alex Young

66min: Fantastic save from De Gea!

Armstrong does brilliantly inside the area to stand one up for Aribo from close range, and that’s a brilliant reaction stop.

13:48 , Alex Young

61min: Southampton readying two subs. They have responded well to going behind.

13:45 , Alex Young

57min: It’s fair to say Fernandes had been very poor up until that fine finish. And not for the first time in his United career.

GOAL!

13:41 , Alex Young

55min: What a finish from Fernandes!

Dalot storms down the left and fizzes in a cross, Fernandes has a lot to do and sweeps the ball home with ease... but that wasn’t easy!

13:38 , Alex Young

52min: Elanga looks to have squeezed through the Southampton defence with just the goalkeeper to beat but Salisu gets back to clear quite forcefully.

13:36 , Alex Young

50min: Fred, Ronaldo and Casemiro all warming up.

Dalot has just been booked for a late challenge on Djenepo.

13:35 , Alex Young

49min: Powerful effort on target from McTominay.

13:34 , Alex Young

48min: The pitch at St Mary’s isn’t in great shape. According to BT Sport, the turf has a “disease”, which the Southampton ground staff are working hard to fix.

Second half

Back under way.

13:22 , Alex Young

Not the most exciting 45 minutes of football you will ever see.

Still, United were 4-0 down at half-time in their last away game, so progress is being made.

Half-time

13:15 , Alex Young

46min: Not a single second of added time.

13:15 , Alex Young

45min: It wasn’t Eriksen, but Fernandes... and it’s straight into the wall.

13:14 , Alex Young

44min: Free kick for United on the edge of the area after a clumsy foul on McTominay by Aribo.

Eriksen licks his lips.

13:12 , Alex Young

42min: Fernandes not at the races yet today. Another hopeful punt, this time looking for Sancho through the centre, is cut out by Southampton.

13:08 , Alex Young

38min: Has Rashford touched the ball?

13:07 , Alex Young

37min: A superb ball into the six-yard box from Eriksen, which Fernandes asked for but couldn’t get on the end of.

13:02 , Alex Young

32min: Adams now shoots straight at De Gea.

Chance!

13:01 , Alex Young

31min: Southampton should be ahead!

Bella-Kotchap misses a sitter from a corner after the ball sat up for him around eight yards out.

13:00 , Alex Young

30min: Southampton really growing in threat, with Walker-Peters finding plenty of space down his right flank.

12:58 , Alex Young

26min: Midway through the first half and United with the better chances, all four of them coming within about five seconds of each other.

12:53 , Alex Young

23min: Southampton slowly starting to make chances. Salisu with a dangerous-looking cross into the box, which De Gea picks up.

12:50 , Alex Young

21min: Corner comes to nothing.

12:50 , Alex Young

20min: HOW DID MANCHESTER UNITED NOT SCORE?!

Bazunu and his defenders just made about five blocks combined. Remarkable.

12:44 , Alex Young

14min: Manchester United fans singing to Southampton fans: “You’re just a small town in Portsmouth.”

12:43 , Alex Young

13min: First effort on goal for Southampton as Armstrong directs a weak header at De Gea. He looked almost surprised to win the ball in the box there.

12:41 , Alex Young

11min: Another good break from United, this time through Sancho who makes fine progress up the left-hand side. The ball eventually breaks to Dalot on the other flank but his cross into the area is cut out.

12:37 , Alex Young

8min: Fernandes now goes for a punt from the halfway line, but it’s nowhere near strong enough.

12:36 , Alex Young

6min: United break over the half-time line through Fernandes, who has Elanga to his left and Sancho to his right. He opts for the former but then pass is weak and is easily cut out.

Poor, that.

12:35 , Alex Young

5min: Not a huge amount of note happening in these opening stages. Plenty of action in the middle of the action.

The home support is very loud.

12:34 , Alex Young

3min: United in a quite unsightly lime green and yellow kit today. Let’s hope their performance is a little easier on the eye.

Kick-off!

12:30 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

12:24 , Alex Young

Almost time here. The teams will be in the tunnel shortly.

United on the road

12:03 , Alex Young

Manchester United have lost seven straight Premier League away games in a row - will today be no.8?

They haven’t lost at St Mary’s since 2003 but have drawn four of their last six.

Perraud returns

11:51 , Alex Young

Romain Perraud is on the bench for Ralph Hasenhuttl after returning from a groin injury.

Che Adams, who was subbed on and scored a game-winning brace against Leicester last weekend, got the start for Southampton.

United unchanged

11:46 , Alex Young

Erik ten Hag has stuck with the same side which beat Liverpool, with potential debutant Casemiro sat on the bench alongside Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The manager has said of Casemiro: "I think we have a squad that’s competitive so it’s always a difficult decision but we had a really good performance on Monday so you stick with it.

“It’s also to give Casemiro the time, he’s not played 90 minutes, he has to adapt to England, adapt to Man United and integrate into the team."

Man United XI

Casemiro is on the bench.

11:25 , Alex Young

Team news to come in just over five minutes.

Maguire on the bench

11:04 , Alex Young

Harry Maguire is likely to keep his place on the bench today, despite his status as club captain.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said on Friday: "I don't think that when you are captain you are established to play always. Especially when you also have Varane in your squad.

"We have options. And you have already said… Varane… his stature is immense and in pre-season we took a decision to build him physically so he had a bit of a slow start.

"So he was fit in the first games but in the first period of pre-season he wasn’t always, so we are happy we built him in that way and you see when the team needed him he was really there and his profile, his stature and what he won already in the past shows he can really contribute to his team.

"For the team, there is competition and we need that. We have to cover so many games."

Score prediction

10:49 , Alex Young

Confidence is - finally - on the up at Manchester United and the players appear to be listening to the manager based on their performance against Liverpool.

Saturday poses a different task, though, and a different type of motivation.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is in a similar situation ahead of two tough games, but I feel United’s superior quality should shine through.

United win, 2-0.

Man United team news

New signing Casemiro could make his Manchester United debut, but Anthony Martial (Achilles) is absent.

Victor Lindelof is pushing to return, with Facundo Pellistri, Brandon Williams, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe among the absentees.

Southampton team news

Southampton defender Romain Perraud has returned to training and could be involved, having missed two matches after battling a foot fracture at the end of last season and groin concerns this campaign.
