Southampton 1-1 Man United LIVE! Premier League result, match stream, latest updates - Greenwood goal

Southampton vs Manchester United - LIVE!

A second-half strike from Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood cancelled out an own goal from team mate Fred to earn a 1-1 draw at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

United had a euphoric start to the season with a 5-1 home win over Leeds United but could not repeat that performance and were lucky not to lose to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s organised and dynamic side.

Southampton took the lead on the half-hour mark after a bright spell when Jack Stephens dispossessed Bruno Fernandes in the United half and the hosts swiftly moved the ball towards Che Adams, whose shot took a heavy deflection off Fred to squirm inside the near post and past David de Gea.

United defender Harry Maguire had hit the crossbar early on with a looping header while Anthony Martial’s rebound was scrambled off the line by Mohammed Salisu but the half had belonged to Southampton, who swarmed over United with an aggressive high press and caused havoc down the right hand side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side levelled early in the 55th when Greenwood thumped a low shot under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy after clever interplay between Fernandes and Paul Pogba, who added another assist to the five he notched against Leeds.

Southampton finished the game strongest though and Adam Armstrong missed two clear chances to win it, first being denied by a fine save from De Gea following another speedy transition and then failing to steer an Adams flick on towards goal following a corner.

So, it’s a point for United, but the same questions as last season will be raised.

Did Solskjaer really need to play two holding midfielders - Fred and Matic - away to Southampton?

The Red Devils opened up after conceding a goal - as was so often the case last season - but you have to feel that if they want to be title challengers, Solskjaer may need to be braver in these type of games.

Full-time! Southampton 1-1 Man Utd

15:54 , Tom Doyle

That’s it!

A point apiece was fair, but Manchester United fans will not be happy given how good the team looked against Leeds.

That will feel like two points dropped if they want to be in a title challenge.

15:52 , Tom Doyle

Sancho runs and gets the ball for a Saints throw - that’s pretty much the £73m man’s highlight since coming on.

15:51 , Tom Doyle

93 mins: We’ve got about 90 seconds left...

15:50 , Tom Doyle

Pogba plays a crossfield ball, but Wan-Bissaka is off the pace and it runs out for a goal kick.

15:49 , Tom Doyle

Fernandes is limping away after a crunching challenge just before that. It’s not been an ideal trip to the south coast, but a point is better than none.

15:48 , Tom Doyle

90 mins: Pogba prevents a counter, and he’ll pick up a yellow card for his troubles.

15:48 , Tom Doyle

Five minutes of added time here.

15:47 , Tom Doyle

89 mins: Time is almost over to find a winner here, and it feels like it’s heading for a draw with the way both sides are set up for the remaining minutes.

15:45 , Tom Doyle

Lovely little pass from Greenwood in behind to Lingard on the left, but he’s not sharp, and McCarthy collects his deflected looping cross.

15:45 , Tom Doyle

87 mins: Lingard has come on for Matic, but there’s little from United in these closing stages.

15:38 , Tom Doyle

80 mins: United have lost momentum, with the Saints winning another corner.

They look the likelier to win it late on at this rate...

15:35 , Tom Doyle

Ward-Prowse shoots... and De Gea punches unconvincingly.

15:34 , Tom Doyle

United are caught with a counter here and Maguire takes a booking - but it also means Ward-Prowse has a free-kick in a great position...

15:33 , Tom Doyle

United change - McTominay on for Fred.

15:32 , Tom Doyle

74 mins: A Saints corner is headed on towards the back post, but they can’t get it into the net!

Nervy moments for United...

Save from De Gea!

15:31 , Tom Doyle

What a save from De Gea!

Maguire is badly caught out on the flank and Armstrong is played in through the middle... he shoots, but De Gea makes a stunning stop to his left.

What a chance for the Saints...

15:27 , Tom Doyle

68 mins: The free-kick is cleared as far as Greenwood, but he shanks well wide on the volley.

The Saints make a sub, and Diallo is on for Djenepo.

15:26 , Tom Doyle

Djenepo carelessly kicks Fernandes over on the flank for a free-kick. He’s on a booking and wags his finger in fear, but that was never going to be a second booking - he won’t get many more though.

15:24 , Tom Doyle

66 mins: The Saints are tiring as United snap at the ball in the hosts’ half - how long can Hasenhuttle’s men last?

Watch: Greenwood goal

15:23 , Tom Doyle

Here is the moment United went level...

15:22 , Tom Doyle

This is all United!

Fernandes powers a header at goal which McCarthy shovels away, and Pogba - on the deck - can’t quite get to the rebound.

15:21 , Tom Doyle

63 mins: Greenwood is not far away from his second, heading a clipped Fred ball onto the roof of the net.

15:20 , Tom Doyle

60 mins: A break in play for treatment for Adams, but he’s OK to continue.

15:16 , Tom Doyle

58 mins: Pogba is on one in this half.

He twists and turns the whole Southampton defence from 20 yards out, and narrowly sends a low shut curling wide of the left-hand post.

15:16 , Tom Doyle

58 mins: Martial has flattered to deceive today, and he makes way for Sancho.

Martial is running out of chances to stake a claim for a regular starting role, and he won’t get too many more at this rate...

15:15 , Tom Doyle

57 mins: Decent run from Livramento on the right, but his cross comes to nothing.

He’s a good attacking outlet down that flank.

15:14 , Tom Doyle

United have struck level, and Jadon Sancho is being readied...

GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Man Utd | Greenwood, 54 mins

15:12 , Tom Doyle

United are level!

After missing Fernandes’ cross, Pogba recovers from the left and dinks a cute ball to Fernandes in the box.

He plays it back, Pogba flicks it to Greenwood, who finishes!

1-1, game on.

15:11 , Tom Doyle

53 mins: The Saints have grown into this half now and are matching United - the game is nicely balanced.

Fernandes plays a cross in from the right, but Pogba hesitates...

15:10 , Tom Doyle

Djenepo is up and back on the pitch - he looks OK to continue for now.

15:09 , Tom Doyle

A worry for the Saints here as Djenepo is down and needs treatment.

15:09 , Tom Doyle

Livramento is teed up from the right, 30 yards out, and he fancies an Essien-esque drive fading from left to right... but he doesn’t get it right. Nice idea, though.

15:09 , Tom Doyle

51 mins: Djenepo wrestles Fred for a good five seconds, and the yellow card comes out. It wasn’t malicious, but it was as blatant as you can get.

15:06 , Tom Doyle

Southampton catch United out with a quick throw, but De Gea claims the cross - not great concentration from the visitors there.

15:05 , Tom Doyle

47 mins: United appeal for a penalty after Pogba’s volley crashes off Salisu, but the VAR check is complete - no handball. The Saints clear another corner, but United have started brightly here.

15:04 , Tom Doyle

An early corner for United, but the Saints clear their lines.

KICK-OFF!

15:02 , Malik Ouzia

It’s Southampton who have gone to the bench at the break - Jan Bednarek is on in place of Theo Walcott.

14:56 , Malik Ouzia

Well, he’s not got Edinson Cavani or Marcus Rashford to call on from the bench, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has plenty of options, most notably Jadon Sancho.

He could push Mason Greenwood through the middle, too, having seen the Englishman excel there last weekend against Leeds. Food for thought at the break.

Worth remembering United came from behind at half-time to win here last season.

Here’s the goal that splits the sides...

14:52 , Malik Ouzia

HT: Southampton 1-0 Man United

14:47 , Malik Ouzia

The home side lead at the interval.

14:44 , Malik Ouzia

44 mins: Decent chance. Shaw bends in an outswinging corner and Matic gets up best but his header is well held by McCarthy, with Pogba lurking for the rebound.

14:41 , Malik Ouzia

41 mins: Fred is having an absolutely torrid afternoon. Livramento has just managed to run the length of the field with the Brazilian snapping at his heels to no effect, but his ball across the face of goal is just out of reach for Armstrong.

14:37 , Malik Ouzia

37 mins: That goal has actually been awarded as a Fred own goal. Seems a little harsh because the ball had literally just left Adams’ boot - no idea whether it would have been on target or not.

14:33 , Malik Ouzia

33 mins: Bruno Fernandes was booked, by the way, for his protestations against that goal.

GOAL! Southampton 1-0 Man United | Fred (OG) 30’

14:30 , Malik Ouzia

Saints are in front!

It’s against the run of play but it’s a well worked goal, really. Stephens goes in hard on Bruno and the Portuguese is furious but it’s a good, clean tackle and from there a couple of one-touch flicks on the edge of the box leave Adams the space to shoot.

The Scotland international takes aim and is gets an immediate deflection off Fred which does for De Gea and carries it into the bottom corner.

14:28 , Malik Ouzia

28 mins: A first sighter for Adam Armstrong, who is found on the edge of the box by Djenepo and bends for the top corner. Not a million miles away.

14:24 , Malik Ouzia

25 mins: Fred’s having one - he’s just booted it straight off the park again.

14:21 , Malik Ouzia

21 mins: More probing stuff from United, Pogba and Fernandes linking up nicely. After a bright start, Southampton are hanging on a touch here.

14:17 , Malik Ouzia

17 mins: Paul Pogba’s influence is growing already but the other two in the United midfield, Matic and Fred, have both made pretty sloppy starts, the latter passing the ball straight out of play just now.

14:13 , Malik Ouzia

13 mins: And again, and this time Pogba should do better. It’s the same combination, Shaw’s free-kick, and the Frenchman is unmarked in the middle of the goal but can’t keep his header down.

14:12 , Malik Ouzia

12 mins: Again, the home side look far from comfortable defending a set-piece. It’s Shaw’s free-kick from the left this time that Adams can’t head away and Pogba has time to let it drop at the far post but his strike is blocked by Salisu.

Off the bar!

14:08 , Malik Ouzia

7 mins: I’ve no idea how this has stayed out.

Bruno Fernandes sends in a magnificent free-kick that Lindelof can’t quite connect with at the near post but Maguire is steaming in round the back. The ball loops up off his toe and onto the crossbar before coming back to Martial, who nods goalwards again and some combination of about three Saints defenders manage to stop it on the line and then hook clear.

14:04 , Malik Ouzia

4 mins: It’s been a decent start from the home side, decent intensity, good pressing. After that first free-kick chance, Ward-Prowse has had two opportunities to deliver corners but neither are up to his usual high standards.

14:02 , Malik Ouzia

1 min: There’s James Ward-Prowse. The Saints skipper, who committed his future to the club earlier this week, tries to catch De Gea out at the near post with a free-kick that looks better placed for a cross than a shot but the Spaniard scrambles across to palm round the post.

KICK-OFF!

14:00 , Malik Ouzia

We are up and running...

13:57 , Malik Ouzia

The teams are on their way out on the south coast - almost showtime. A packed St. Mary’s, but it’s the travelling United fans making most of the noise.

Ten minutes to go...

13:52 , Malik Ouzia

Kick-off is just around the corner at St. Mary’s.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to Sky Sports...

13:45 , Malik Ouzia

On the two changes - “Scott [McTominay]’s got a slight injury but hopefully he can do half-an-hour. With Anthony [Martial], we thought he was the right man for this game.”

On Sancho and Varane - “Both of them are getting there, they’re still lacking a bit of fitness. If they’re needed they’ll come on.”

Saints unchanged

13:33 , Malik Ouzia

Despite their defeat on the opening weekend, Ralph Hasenhuttl has stuck with the same XI that started against Everton.

The headline news from that is that 18-year-old Valentino Livramento keeps his place at right-back, with Kyle Walker-Peters only on the bench.

Matic starts

13:22 , Malik Ouzia

As for the starting XI, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has broken up the midfield partnership of Scott McTominay and Fred, only the Brazilian keeping his place as Nemanja Matic comes into the midfield.

The only other change to the XI that started against Leeds sees Anthony Martial come in for Daniel James.

Sancho, Varane on the bench

13:13 , Malik Ouzia

We’ll come on to the starting lineup shortly, but I suppose the big news for Manchester United is that neither of their big summer signings are handed a first start for the club but both Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are on the bench this evening.

That means that Victor Lindelof keeps his place alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence, though you’d imagine it’ll be a matter of when, not if, he loses his place.

Garner signs new deal and heads on loan

12:41 , Malik Ouzia

A bit of transfer news to bring you ahead of kick-off concerning Manchester United youngster James Garner.

The academy graduate has penned a new deal to keep him at the club until 2024, with the option of an extra year, and immediately returned to Nottingham Forest on loan, having spent the second half of last season at the City Ground.

Southampton team news

12:33 , Malik Ouzia

Southampton are set to remain without academy graduates Sam McQueen and Will Smallbone, who are both sidelined with knee injuries.

They have, however, been buoyed by the confirmation of James Ward Prowse’s new contract this week, the midfielder putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Man United team news

12:24 , Malik Ouzia

Manchester United were boosted ahead of their thumping of Leeds by the overdue unveiling of £42million signing Raphael Varane, who will hope to play some part on the south coast.

Fellow high-profile new recruit Jadon Sancho made his debut with a 15-minute cameo on opening day and was part of a strong United lineup for a behind-closed-doors practice match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The likes of Jesse Lingard, Harry Maguire, Fred, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly and Tom Heaton also featured in that 3-1 win, though there was no Varane.

Phil Jones, meanwhile, got some crucial minutes under his belt as he steps up his recovery after more than 18 months out with a knee injury.

United are still without Marcus Rashford (shoulder) and Alex Telles (ankle), though goalkeeper Dean Henderson - who, like Lingard, has been recovering after testing positive for Covid-19 - could return to contention this weekend.

Likewise Edinson Cavani, who scored two goals off the bench in a memorable fightback at St Mary’s last season. He has now completed a mandatory period of isolation following his return from Uruguay after the Copa America.

Standard Sport prediction

12:10 , Malik Ouzia

Manchester United were absolutely irresistible in the second half against Leeds, with Fernandes and Pogba unplayable as they ran the show, but the likes of Scott McTominay also hugely influential.

If they can rediscover those sorts of consistently dominant home performances and maintain last season’s incredible away form, then a genuine title tilt could really be on the cards this term.

Southampton will be firmly up against it here with horrible memories of last season’s meetings with United, when they led 2-0 at home and lost 3-2 before being humiliated 9-0 at Old Trafford in February.

Away win.

Southampton 1-3 Manchester United.
