Spain vs England LIVE! Euro 2024 final result, match stream, latest reaction and updates as Three Lions beaten
Spain vs England - LIVE!
England's wait for a first major men's trophy since 1966 goes on after substitute Mikel Oyarzabal struck at the death as Spain inflicted a second successive European Championship final defeat on Gareth Southgate's side.
Three years ago the nation stood on the edge of history, only for an agonising, all too familiar, shoot-out defeat meaning they had to walk past the trophy as Italy celebrated long into the Wembley night. England overcame an unconvincing start in Germany to make another continental showpiece, but the country's first ever final on foreign soil ended more heartbreak as silky Spain triumphed 2-1 at the Olympiastadion.
Substitute Cole Palmer's superb equaliser had breathed new life into Southgate's side after Nico Williams shook what had looked sturdy foundations 69 seconds into the second half. But England could not wrest control from mightily impressive Spain, with Oyarzabal sliding home what proved the decisive blow four minutes from time.
Marc Guehi saw a header cleared off the line as England showed the never-say-die attitude that has served them so well in Germany, but Southgate's side just did not have enough in his 102nd - and potentially last - match in charge. England's heartbroken players dropped to their deck at the final whistle with those clad in red running wild as Spain celebrated a record fourth European Championship crown.

No fairytale, Gareth Southgate. But no dream come true either.
On a cruel night here in Berlin, it happened again, England beaten in a European Championship final for the second time in three years.
For a moment after Cole Palmer had become the latest substitute to deliver a star turn by levelling at 1-1, you really believed, in all the talk of fate, of illogic against reason, and sensed this summer of comebacks was to live on. “England ’til I die”, they sang. And somehow this lot never do.
But at the last, four minutes from time with 30 extra in sight, Mikel Oyarzabal delivered a taste of England’s own, Spain, the tournament’s best team, champions of Europe for the fourth time.
"I definitely feel it's coming"

Not to be for England tonight, but Jude Bellingham insists England’s moment will come.

Fourth European crown

1964. 2008. 2012. 2024.
Spain are the first country to win the men’s Euros four times, and it’s hard to argue that they weren’t the best side over the past month.

Not on the manager?
23:13 , Matt Verri
Jamie Carragher has had his say...
Sven played 442, Fabio was too strict, Gareth is too defensive!
Funny how it’s always on the manager isn’t it?!!
The fact is our big players didn’t turn up in this tournament. And other tournaments going back years.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) July 14, 2024
Ferdinand: Players a shadow of themselves
22:58 , Matt Verri
Rio Ferdinand believes there are questions to answer over England’s approach, both tonight and through the tournament.
He said: “We said it after the group stage, if you’re going to play on the conservative side of things with the talent in this squad... you have to win.
“Otherwise it will be dissected as a negative approach, that falls on the manager’s toes. He sets the team out in a particular way to play and that’s his style of football, but you have to win playing like that.
“These players are too good, they play too well for their clubs to look a shadow of themselves [for England].”
Southgate discusses England future
22:46 , Matt Verri
Gareth Southgate said he will talk “to the right people” before making a decision on his future as England manager.
His current contract expires in December, though the FA are believed to be keen on a new deal.
“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that,” Southgate told ITV.
“I’ve got to talk to the right people. It’s just not for now.”
England player ratings
22:17 , Matt Verri
Jordan Pickford 8
Twice saved brilliantly from teenager Yamal in the second half to keep England in the game. Could not fault him for either goal, which were the result of defensive lapses.
Kyle Walker 4
Dragged out of position for both Spain goals. Sucked in by Alvaro Morata for the opener, leaving Williams alone at the back post, and could not stop Cucurella’s cross for the winner.
Harry Kane 3
Well off the pace in another leggy performance and hooked on the hour. At some point in the future, he will surely admit to not being fully fit this summer.

Awards handed out...

Young Player of the Tournament... no surprise that it goes to Lamine Yamal.
And Player of the Tournament is awarded to Rodri, who continues to clean up for club and country.
The run goes on

Whether it’s the Spanish national side or club teams, they just know how to get it done.
Since May 2001, Spanish teams have played in 27 major finals (Champions League, Europa League, World Cup, Euros). There has been a Spanish winner in all 27 finals.

Watch: Palmer's brilliant equaliser
22:02 , Matt Verri
Lovely lay-off from Bellingham, superb finish from Palmer.
England had the momentum, Spain briefly looked to be a bit rattled.
But the Three Lions dropped deeper in those final ten minutes and it felt increasingly inevitable they would be stung.

FT: Spain 2-1 England
21:53 , Matt Verri
And it’s all over.
The wait goes on for England, Spain are European champions once again.
Heartbreak.
Spain 2-1 England
21:51 , Matt Verri
90+2 mins: Spain killing this pretty well, ticking away the seconds.
Toney is on for England... will he even get a kick?
Spain 2-1 England
21:49 , Matt Verri
90 mins: HOW HAS IT NOT GONE IN?!
Rice’s header is saved, Guehi’s cleared off the line... Rice then heads just over.
Three chances in about five seconds. All come and go.
Four minutes added on.
Spain 2-1 England
21:47 , Matt Verri
Nope. Onside.
England have two minutes plus stoppage-time to throw the biggest kitchen sink they can find at this.
21:46 , Matt Verri
It is veeeeeeery tight for offside.
VAR will have a look.
GOAL! Spain 2-1 England | Mikel Oyarzabal 86'
21:45 , Matt Verri
Devastating.
Spain attack down their left, low ball into the box and Oyarzabal gets there, sliding in to divert the ball past Pickford.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
21:43 , Matt Verri
Pickford deserves enormous credit for the two saves from Yamal. The first stopped England going 2-0 down, the second denied Spain what would surely have been the goal of the tournament.
He's been immense again.
Spain 1-1 England
21:43 , Matt Verri
84 mins: Feels like England haven’t touched the ball for about five minutes.
Spain are dominating possession, and you wouldn’t say England are looking rock solid at the back.
It’s a 4-4-2 of sorts, with Saka and Foden the two wingers, but they are dropping so deep, nearly a back six.
Spain 1-1 England
21:41 , Matt Verri
82 mins: Palmer loses it in midfield, danger for England as Williams comes driving forward.
Olmo’s jink creates space in the box, it falls for Yamal at the back post... huuuuuge save from Pickford.
That was a massive chance. And this is becoming unbearable again.
Spain 1-1 England
21:39 , Matt Verri
80 mins: Carvajal down the line, Guehi there to see it out of play for a goal-kick.
England starting to drop deeper again...
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
21:37
I've just watched Jude Bellingham for a few minutes and his body language his unrecognisable from the frustrated figure that stropped his way through the back end of the group stage.
He's bang in the centre of midfield, pointing, urging, applauding.
Spain 1-1 England
21:36 , Matt Verri
77 mins: Spain slowing things down, trying to keep the ball and get a bit of momentum back.
How much does either side want to risk pushing for a winner?
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
21:35 , Matt Verri
England and Southgate have done it again!
Another insired substitition from the manager, another outstanding finish to drag the team back into the game.
Spain 1-1 England
21:34 , Matt Verri
75 mins: And here come England again!
Saka twists into the box, ball into the six-yard box and it’s hacked away. Spain are under real pressure.
GOAL! Spain 1-1 England | Cole Palmer 73'
21:32 , Matt Verri
COLE PALMER GETS ENGLAND LEVEL!
MASSIVE.
Ball played back, Palmer running onto it and from the edge of the area, he just passes it into the bottom corner.
Bellingham with the assist, Palmer with the goal. Sensational.
Spain 1-0 England
21:31 , Matt Verri
72 mins: Watkins definitely has had an impact, Spanish defenders now up against someone who can run in behind. Kane... was not doing that.
Oyarzabal through on goal, forced wide and easily saved by Pickford.
Spain 1-0 England
21:29 , Matt Verri
70 mins: Ruiz tries his luck from miles out, it’s well over the bar.
Here is another England sub. Mainoo off, Palmer on. Imagine that will mean Bellingham dropping deeper.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
21:27 , Matt Verri
The Watkins sub has forced Spain to defend a little deeper and there was a glimpse of the possible benefit for Bellingham with that turn and shot.
England will, surely, have a moment in the final 20 minutes. They just have to take it.
Spain 1-0 England
21:26 , Matt Verri
67 mins: Oyarzabal coming on for Spain, as captain Morata makes way.
Can’t be long until we see more England changes. Palmer, Eze, Toney, Bowen, Gordon... not short of options.
Increasingly short of time, though.
Spain 1-0 England
21:25 , Matt Verri
66 mins: Pickford with a brilliant save, as Spain very nearly double their lead.
Ball through to Yamal, first touch isn’t a great one but it leaves the ball rolling back onto his left foot.
Guided towards the far corner, tipped behind by Pickford.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
21:23 , Matt Verri
Ollie Watkins has got probably 50,000 people inside the Olympic Stadium singing his name in the middle of the final of the European Championship.
Things change fast, don't they.
Spain 1-0 England
21:23 , Matt Verri
64 mins: Much better!
Saka with the ball inside, sublime turn from Bellingham... so good that Olmo and Carvajal take each other it.
England midfielder fires just wide from the edge of the area, great effort though.
Spain 1-0 England
21:22 , Matt Verri
63 mins: Saka brought down by Williams out wide, good position for Foden to swing a cross into the box.
Not a great ball in, headed out at the near post and Rice has to pass it all the way back to his goalkeeper.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
21:20 , Matt Verri
Howls of frustration from the England fans as yet another cross into the box is cleared by a Spanish defender with Kane not making the run across him.
That'll be his last act.
Spain 1-0 England
21:19 , Matt Verri
61 mins: Here is the first change from Southgate - it’s a big one.
Kane off, he’s had a pretty poor match. Watkins on for England, who will now have some pace up front. Need it.
Spain 1-0 England
21:18 , Matt Verri
59 mins: Spain content to slow things down, knocking the ball around comfortably. England sitting deep still, they look a bit stunned.
Olmo very nearly picks out Morata, Shaw slides in to intercept. Crucial he did so.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
21:16 , Matt Verri
Shaw and Walker were outstanding against Yamal and Williams in the first half but they were both caught out for the goal.
Yamal got the wrong side of Shaw and Walker was dragged out of position by Morata, leaving Williams free at the far post.
Spain's wingers have been the stars of this tournament and that was why.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
21:15 , Matt Verri
I have never seen Marc Guehi that animated. He's usually a very calm man and has even said in this tournament he's found it a bit strange playing with the manic Jordan Pickford behind him.
But he was absolutely livid with his team-mates there after blocking Morata's shot.
Spain 1-0 England
21:15 , Matt Verri
56 mins: Williams full of confidence, lines up the shot from 20 yards out. Whistles just wide.
England are all over the place at the moment. Can’t keep the ball, can’t get out and Spain are running riot.
Have to somehow keep this at 1-0.
Spain 1-0 England
21:14 , Matt Verri
55 mins: Williams completely free again, fortunately for England Morata decides to go for goal himself from 20 yards out instead. Blocked.
And now off the line! Morata played in, slides a finish past Pickford but Stones is there to clear.
Might just have been going wide.
Spain 1-0 England
21:12 , Matt Verri
53 mins: It is wild how open suddenly England are. Rock solid in the first half, but there’s so, so much space for Spain now.
Zubimendi strolls into it, Stones can only drag him down and it’s a booking.
Spain 1-0 England
21:11 , Matt Verri
52 mins: England starting to get on the ball again, after that shambles of a start to the half.
Walker in space on the right, but he absolutely launches a cross over everyone and out of play.
Spain 1-0 England
21:08 , Matt Verri
49 mins: It should be 2-0!
What happened in that England dressing room at half-time? The defence is a mess, there’s no midfield.
Williams fires the pass into Olmo, free in the box and he drags a shot just wide.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
21:07 , Matt Verri
England must come from behind to win a fourth major tournament knockout game in a row.
They'd only done it three times in their history as of a month ago.
GOAL! Spain 1-0 England | Nico Williams 47'
21:06 , Matt Verri
Spain in front!
Barely a minute after the restart. A flick on the right wing and Yamal can drive inside, so much space.
He plays it to Williams who is completely free, first-time finish fired low past Pickford.
Back underway!
21:03 , Matt Verri
We’re up and running in the second-half.
Zubimendi is on for Spain... Rodri is off! That’s a huge blow for Spain.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:58 , Matt Verri
The big fear - that England might just be outplayed - has not come to pass.
Bitty game, fairly even. Stones and Shaw excellent.
20:56 , Matt Verri
“Not been good enough,” is Roy Keane’s verdict on Harry Kane’s performance so far.
Once again the striker hasn’t really been involved, England don’t have that mobility up front when they are trying to counter.
Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins will be sensing an opportunity.
First-half stats...
20:53 , Matt Verri
Spain have dominated the ball, nearly 70% possession so far.
Five shots, one on target and that was a deflected effort, comfortably saved by Pickford.
England have had three efforts, with Foden’s volley the only one to trouble Simon.
The Three Lions have been solid at the back, Shaw really impressive up against Yamal.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
20:50 , Matt Verri
For my money, England have had the better openings - Rice & Kane shots blocked by Rodri, and Foden late chance - but Spain more of the ball.
Cagey game very much in the balance.
HT: Spain 0-0 England
20:48 , Matt Verri
And that’s half-time.
It’s very cagey, very tight. Nothing in it at all.
Spain 0-0 England
20:46 , Matt Verri
45+1 mins: Swung to the back post, drops for Foden and his volley is saved!
Simon tested at long last, but it’s fairly comfortable for the goalkeeper.
Spain 0-0 England
20:45 , Matt Verri
45 mins: Kane’s shot on the edge of the box is charged down, but Walker then wins a free-kick with Williams too keen in the challenge.
Up come the England defenders, as the board goes up to show two minutes added on.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:44 , Matt Verri
It is just not happening for Harry Kane at the moment.
When he comes short, the pass goes long and vice-versa.
When there's a 60-40 in his favour, it seems a Spanish player nips in first.
Spain 0-0 England
20:43 , Matt Verri
43 mins: Morata nearly bundles his way through Guehi in the box, but Stones his swiftly on the scene to clear it behind.
Corner is swung in, Mainoo takes control at the back post and then does very well to win the goal kick.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
20:43 , Matt Verri
It's a measure of how little change Yamal is getting from Shaw that Williams briefly went over to the right to have a go.
The teenager is yet to get in this game and, given the number of hopeful balls Spain are throwing into the box, you imagine Gareth Southgate will be pleased with his side's defending.
Spain 0-0 England
20:42 , Matt Verri
41 mins: Kane with the switch out to Saka, he has space on the right.
Inside to Mainoo, who plays it first time... to nobody in particular.
Spain win it and Walker, who had flown forward on the overlap, starts his commute back home.
Spain 0-0 England
20:39 , Matt Verri
39 mins: Stones fires the ball back to Pickford, who is back right on his line.
To the relief of an entire nation, his touch is a good one under pressure.
Spain 0-0 England
20:38 , Matt Verri
37 mins: Kane, Bellingham, Saka... very little happening for England in attack.
Spanish forwards have been more lively, Williams in particular. But Walker and Shaw are both having good games, and it’s needed.
Spain 0-0 England
20:35 , Matt Verri
35 mins: Yamal up against Shaw again... once more the England man is up to the task.
Corner for Spain, players falling everywhere in the middle. Rice had a fair old hold of Laporte, but it will just be another corner for Spain.
Scuffed effort from the edge of the box, England clear.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
20:34 , Matt Verri
After a flowing start from Spain, this game has become bitty, with the rhythm disrupted by a series of occasionally-fierce challenges.
That probably suits England, who have a foothold after initially struggling to get on the ball.
Spain 0-0 England
20:32 , Matt Verri
32 mins: Bellingham fouled, gets back up, steps up on the ball and trips... and then the whistle does go.
Advantage was being played, Rodri has dragged Bellingham back. It’s all very scrappy.
Spain 0-0 England
20:30 , Matt Verri
30 mins: Kane dropping into midfield, not sharp enough though and Williams can get back and win the ball for Spain.
At the other end, a lovely flick from Williams very nearly opens England up, but Morata then makes a mess of the pass.
Just as well for England, Olmo was waiting to be played in.
Olmo then clatters into Rice, and the yellow card is out again.
Spain 0-0 England
20:28 , Matt Verri
28 mins: Ruiz drops his shoulder, strolls into the box and gets the shot away, but enough of a block from Guehi. Ball flicks up for Pickford to claim.
We’ve played nearly half an hour - nothing yet in the way of clear-cut chances.
Spain 0-0 England
20:25 , Matt Verri
25 mins: There is a yellow card... for Kane.
He took a heavy touch, then lunged in to try and get control of it again. Ended up catching Olmo, late and catches him on the ankle.
Can’t really complain.
Spain 0-0 England
20:24 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Foden gives the ball away, Yamal drives into the box and it’s another Spanish corner.
England clear and they can break, Saka leading the charge. That is until Carvajal shoves him over.
Just a warning from the referee - Kane among those unimpressed a card isn’t shown.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
20:22 , Matt Verri
Shaw has made an excellent start against Lamine Yamal, dispossessing the teenager three times so far.
Spain's attacks are largely coming down the opposite flank through Cucurella and Williams.
Spain 0-0 England
20:20 , Matt Verri
20 mins: Ruiz wide to Williams, who again is one-on-one with Walker.
Right back slows him down, forces Williams to turn back. Yamal drifting into the middle, combines with Olmo but against England have bodies back.
Saka leaves Cucurella on the ground, massive cheers from the stands. England and German fans enjoyed that.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:19 , Matt Verri
A good few minutes for England there. It should have put a little bit of doubt in Spanish minds about the number of players they can commit forward.
Twice, England switched the ball quickly from left to right and gave Saka chance to go on a run.
Spain 0-0 England
20:17 , Matt Verri
17 mins: Rice with a shot blocked, England’s best spell of the match.
Saka cuts inside, flicks the ball to Foden and he can’t quite make space for the shot. Laporte clears the danger.
Spain 0-0 England
20:16 , Matt Verri
16 mins: England corner this time, Walker flying forward down the right wing.
He has time to pick someone out, but it’s turned behind at the near post.
Foden to take... terrible ball in.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:15 , Matt Verri
If Spain are clever here they'll be getting the ball out to Williams and giving him chance to test Walker ASAP.
Spain 0-0 England
20:13 , Matt Verri
13 mins: Stones does really well in the box, had Williams running at him but concedes the corner.
Concern for England, Walker has gone down after sliding off the pitch and into the Spanish manager. Hopefully something he can walk off.
That Spanish corner leads to nothing, Le Normand hooking the ball wide.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:11 , Matt Verri
Loose pass from Rice there but it might actually have worked in England's favour because I reckon that's Rodri one foul away from a booking.
Then again, it is Rodri...
Spain 0-0 England
20:10 , Matt Verri
10 mins: Chance for England to get a bit of control, as Bellingham is caught by Rodri. Whistle goes.
It goes again... Guehi with a push in the middle as the ball is floated to the back post.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
20:09 , Matt Verri
Spain absolutely bossing the ball at the moment but Gareth Southgate will have told his players to expect this.
They have to be willing to sit in and suffer at times.
Crucially, though, when the loose pass does come, they have to be more composed themselves.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Olympiastadion
20:09 , Matt Verri
Marc Cucurella getting booed with every touch, most likely from Germany fans frustrated that he escaped conceding a penalty in the quarter-finals.
Spain are in complete control of possession in the early stages, with England sitting off but struggling to get on the ball.
Spain 0-0 England
20:08
8 mins: Williams and Olmo very nearly combine on the edge of the England box, but Walker does well to get his body in the way.
Three Lions having to get through a bit of pressure in the early stages, Spain on top.
Spain 0-0 England
20:06
6 mins: Cucurella being booed every single time he touches the ball.
Happened in the semi-final too. German fans are still every so slightly bitter about his ‘handball’ in the last-eight, when the hosts were knocked out.
Spain 0-0 England
20:05 , Matt Verri
5 mins: Williams with a low ball into the box, Stones shanks the clearance behind for a corner.
England deal with it well, though, although Saka is then crowded out as he tries to hold it up and start the counter.
Spain 0-0 England
20:03 , Matt Verri
3 mins: Not much pace in the game at the moment.
Spain seeing most of the ball, but it’s basically at walking pace. England happy to let the centre-backs have it.
Spain 0-0 England
20:02 , Matt Verri
2 mins: It’s a back four from England at the moment. Saka on the right of a three behind Kane, Bellingham on the left and Foden through the middle.
Shaw and Walker as full-backs in a 4-2-3-1.
KICK-OFF!
20:00 , Matt Verri
We’re underway!

Some noise!

Giorgio Chiellini brings out the trophy and is roundly booed by England fans, who presumably haven't forgotten his clothesline on Bukayo Saka in the last Euros final three years ago.
Time to consign those memories to history.
Here we go!
19:54 , Matt Verri
Giorgio Chiellini has walked out onto the pitch, holding the trophy. BOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Anyway, players are out onto the pitch. And it’s an incredible atmosphere.
And from the Spanish camp...
19:51 , Matt Verri
Well the music isn’t going down particularly well with those in the red corner tonight.
Luis Garcia, former Liverpool and more importantly Spain winger, has voiced his discontent with the DJ giving the English fans what they want.
Ah well.
Hey !! Dj at the Stadium in Berlin. WTF !! OASIS, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, IT'S COMING HOME... seriously, give it a break !!#euro2024

The players are back inside.
The closing ceremony is underway, pyrotechnics are going off and music blaring out.
Literally nobody cares. Just over ten minutes until the serious business begins.
Malik Ouzia at the Olympiastadion
19:44 , Matt Verri
Hell of a lot of faff going into assembling the stage and set for a closing ceremony that I assume is going to last about 10 minutes.
Could just get Tom Grennan out there with a microphone singing the Gillette song a couple of times and have it done. Would be better, too.
Certainly done that...
19:40 , Matt Verri
Gareth Southgate has given the country plenty of memorable nights over the past six years.
Deep runs in major tournaments, big wins, but never quite getting over the line.
This could prove to be Southgate’s final match in charge of England - would be beyond special if he gets his hands on the trophy tonight.

Because of the curvature of the ground, which has a covered athletics track around it, the fans even in the front row of seats behind the goal are a good 50 yards from the net.
I've just seen Phil Foden hit a shot that both cleared the bar and then bounced twice before reaching them.
Foden as calm as ever!
19:33 , Matt Verri
Phil Foden not exactly a bag of nerves as he warms up.
Strolling around the pitch, juggling the ball. Not a care in the world.
He hasn’t scored yet at Euro 2024, but Foden has done pretty much everything else. He’s hit the woodwork, had a goal disallowed, efforts cleared off the line...
Will tonight be the night it all comes together?

He might be only just 17 but Lamine Yamal is already the man among Spain's supporters, who reserve the loudest cheer for his name as the team is read out.
A hearty boo from England's supporters toward Marc Cucurella, who has riled the fans of just about every club - including Chelsea - at some point over the last few years with his antics.
Kane looking to break Golden Boot deadlock
19:27 , Matt Verri
UEFA have confirmed that the Euro 2024 Golden Boot will be shared by six players if neither England striker Harry Kane nor Spain's Dani Olmo score tonight.
Kane and Olmo are among the players currently tied on three goals, along with the Netherlands' Cody Gakpo, Germany's Jamal Musiala, Georgia's Georges Mikautadze and Slovakia's Ivan Schranz.
Unless Kane or Olmo add to their tallies in Berlin, the award will be shared rather than determined by another metric such as assists or minutes played.
Time to be brave?

It's funny isn't it.
We've spent all tournament crying out for Luke Shaw at left-back and now he's finally here we're all a bit nervy. A first start in almost 150 days.
The caveat is we don't know how much of that is Gareth Southgate taking a risk and how much is influenced by Kieran Trippier's own fitness.
We've had Wonderwall and now it's Angels over the PA as the big screen shows the England players in the tunnel waiting to come out for their warm-up.
Southgate legacy on the line?
19:15 , Matt Verri
It says everything about Gareth Southgate’s strange personal journey through this European Championship that there is now talk of him staying on.
Ever since he agreed to remain in post after the Qatar World Cup, Euro 2024 was assumed to be his swansong, a final crack at glory for England’s initially-reluctant manager, who had understandably become a touch jaded by the impossible job.
For much of England’s confounding, exhilarating progress through Germany this summer, Southgate appeared destined for a limp goodbye, his side poised to crash out against Slovakia, then Switzerland, then the Netherlands, in a tournament where all his hard work over eight years looked in danger of coming unstuck.
Now, though, as Southgate stands one game from achieving what he set out to, the mood has dramatically shifted.
Win or lose against Spain in this final, the FA hope to persuade the 53-year-old to extend his contract beyond December and lead the nation at a third World Cup, in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
And why not? If Southgate’s England can be champions of Europe, he might be tempted to conquer the world.
