Spetch's stretch sees Magpies triumph over Robins- extending unbeaten run
Dorchester Town 1
Koszela 67
Bracknell Town 0
The Magpies have made it 13 games unbeaten as they saw off Bracknell Town 1-0 at the Avenue Stadium on Saturday.
Outfield player Will Spetch produced a magical moment for the Magpies as he replaced Gerard Benfield in goal and produced a last ditch save in the final seconds of the match to secure the win. He also had to contend with a penalty.
Tom Killick made no changes to the side that had drawn against league leaders Merthyr Town last weekend.
Magpies fans thought they were ahead after Olaf Koszela had the ball in the net just before 10 minutes had passed when Ieuan Turner’s header was cleared off the line, deflecting the ball into the striker’s path. The linesman dowsed celebrations and raised his flag to call offside.
Benfield was performing well, and made a stretching save to deny Bracknell man Roberts after 28 minutes. However the keeper, who was signed permanently earlier this month from Weymouth, was injured making the save and replaced after 35 minutes by defender, Will Spetch.
Just into added time of the first half and Spetch gave away a penalty to the Robins after he was deemed to foul George in the area. Vaughan stepped up to convert the spot kick, but it cleared the cross bar.
Deep into added time Koszela came close again for the Magpies, but this time the Polish striker’s low driven effort was denied by the post.
After 53 minutes, Bracknell almost opened the scoring themselves as they hit the post.
Immediately the Magpies went on the break with a driving run from Harry Hutchinson. He found Koszela with space in the area again, but his effort is tipped away by the keeper.
For all of Koszela’s efforts, the striker eventually found the back of net after 67 minutes. Shaquille Gwengwe, who recently celebrated 100 appearances for the Magpies, did well to cut inside from the right side and pick out the forward who took time to roll the ball onto his right boot before curling it into the bottom corner.
A tense final 20 minutes between the two sides followed before six minutes of added time were signalled.
A deep ball was launched into the area by Bracknell with just seconds left on the clock. X rose highest to flick the ball on but Spetch made a crucial and acrobatic save to turn the ball past his right post.
The result sees the Magpies stay in fourth position. They are now two points behind third placed Gloucester City, and six points ahead of Havant and Waterlooville. The Magpies have played two more than Gloucester and three more than Havant.
Dorchester Town will continue their campaign in the Non-League Premier Southern South next Saturday, as they welcome Sholing Town to the Avenue and make it 14 games unbeaten.
