Spirited Ventnor battered by Romsey in first match since five-week break
VENTNOR were battered by Romsey for the majority of their Counties 3 Hampshire league match on the road, but won the home crowd over with their spirited display.
ROMSEY 53, VENTNOR 7
The match saw the first time father and son combination of Iain and Dylan Reeves play for the Islanders.
But Ventnor found themselves on the back foot for much of their first match, since a five-week break, with the first 20 minutes riddled with mistakes from both sides.
After a missed penalty, Romsey opened the scoring with their first try.
Ventnor continued to compete well, but struggled to retain possession — and a series of missed tackles allowed Romsey to rack up more points.
The Islanders were reduced to 14, after Andy Teague was yellow-carded for repeated high tackles.
Upon Teague's return, he suffered a severe knee injury. The halt in play saw the game move to a different pitch so he could receive medical attention.
Despite this setback, Ventnor managed to score a try, with Cory Turner capitalising on a loose ball to race 30m and touch down under the posts.
This was converted by Ed Blake.
Romsey, however, had the last word, with one more try at the final whistle.
Despite the defeat, the team's relentless spirit was acknowledged by Romsey supporters.
