New sponsor to help Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards celebrate 50th year
The Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year with a new main sponsor.
On March 27, WRS Systems will be the platinum sponsor for the ceremony at Medina Theatre, Newport, honouring sports stars aged eight to 80.
Based in Newport, WRS Systems provides electronic point of sale solutions to various sectors across the UK and Europe and is known for its support of local causes.
The awards night, organised by the Isle of Wight Sports Foundation, will be presented by Lord Grade of Yarmouth and journalist Lucy Morgan, former County Press co-editor.
This year, the event will also spotlight Island Olympians from over the years. More than 20 awards will be given out, covering categories from junior to adult sportspeople.
There will also be special awards for service to sport, lifetime achievement, and outstanding commitment, recognising the unsung heroes of Isle of Wight sport.
The Isle of Wight Sports Foundation expressed delight at WRS Systems' backing.
Claire Beasley, chair of the foundation, said: "This is superb news for our event and will pay for trophies, room hire and all the costs such an event incurs.
"This will allow us to use our own funds for grants to Island sports clubs, allowing them to achieve more in the years to come."
Sophie Jackson, WRS chief operations officer, said: "WRS is delighted to be supporting this year’s sports awards. We have some incredibly talented people on the Island who really deserved to be recognised for their achievements. We can’t wait for the event!"
Nominations are now open and can be made by anyone, closing on January 6, 2025. To nominate a sportsperson or team, visit iowsports.org/awards.
