Manchester United progressed to the last 16 of the Europa League with a win against FCSB on Thursday night.

United went into their final game of the Europa League league phase knowing a win would guarantee progression to the knockout rounds and they secured a 2-0 victory against FCSB.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring after a superb pass from Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo started as a No.10 for the first time under Ruben Amorim and he made it 2-0 in the 67th minute of the game. The youngster delivered an excellent performance in Bucharest and his goal put the game to bed as United progressed to the last 16 of the competition.

Here are the moments you might have missed from the game:

Garnacho lost the ball - and responded

Although Chelsea and Napoli have shown interest in Alejandro Garnacho, he certainly hasn't played like someone whose head has been turned in the January transfer window and there was a moment in the victory against FCSB when he proved he has a future at the club.

Garnacho was introduced to the game at half-time and provided energy, but at one point the youngster lost possession and FCSB came close to scoring - Garnacho was clearly furious with himself.

Just a few minutes later, Garnacho lost the ball again, however, he sprinted back in an attempt to recover possession, which Amorim would have noted on the touchline.

It would be a huge shame if United sold Garnacho. The club was built on promoting young players from the academy and Garnacho's ceiling hasn't been reached, which means he could take his game to another level in the next few years and make United regret letting him go.

Some have argued Garnacho might not fit into Amorim's system, but the player's effort levels clearly aren't a problem, suggesting he will be willing to adapt and learn.

Garnacho was unwell

Garnacho was named on the bench against FCSB, but his squad inclusion might have been in doubt at the start of the week because he was unwell in the build-up to the clash.

Amorim confirmed Garnacho had been unwell in his pre-match interview and it's a credit to the youngster that he travelled to Bucharest, despite probably not being at 100 per cent.

That is the sort of commitment that Amorim wants from all of his players and Garnacho, to his credit, has forced his way back into the squad after being dropped for the Manchester derby, unlike Marcus Rashford, who has only been included in a single squad since last month's win at the Etihad.

Appreciation for Dalot

Dalot will be the first to admit his form has dipped this season and some of his performances haven't been good enough, so his goal against FCSB will do his confidence the world of good.

Mainoo did all the hard work and Dalot couldn't miss, but it was great to see him on the scoresheet and it was telling that his teammates gave him a warm embrace after the goal.

In November, a source admitted that Dalot was feeling the effects of a gruelling 2023/24 campaign but said he's the type of character to continue to give everything for the team.

Dalot has continued to work his socks off for United and is popular in the dressing room. He was a popular scorer on Thursday night and United's players showed their appreciation.

An unexpected record

United have endured a nightmare Premier League campaign so far, but they are the only team to finish the league phase of the revamped Europa League with an unbeaten record.

That nugget of trivia will pop up in a pub quiz in 10 years, so it's worth remembering, and it's incredible that United weren't beaten in Europe given how poorly they've played this term.

It's fair to say there were some bumps along the way - draws against FC Twente and Porto were low points - but United ultimately finished third in a 36-team league table.

Considering the lack of quality and the competition's new format, which means teams from the Champions League no longer drop down, United could win the Europa League and it must be their main target because it will provide qualification for next season's Champions League.
