SAM Burgess has named a strong Warrington Wolves squad for Saturday's trip to Whitehaven in the Challenge Cup third round.

Several of his front-line stars are in the 21-man squad for the clash with the League One side including new club captain George Williams and overseas stars Matt Dufty and Paul Vaughan.

New signings Oli Leyland and Dan Russell are in line for their competitive Wire debuts, but there is no place in the squad for their fellow 2025 signing Alfie Johnson, who has played on the wing in both pre-season friendlies.

There are spots in the squad for Josh Thewlis, James Harrison, Stefan Ratchford and Arron Lindop after all four missed Toby King's Testimonial match against Leigh Leopards last weekend through injury, but King himself is ruled out with a groin niggle.

Hooker Sam Powell and second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon are being targeted to return from their respective shoulder surgeries when The Wire get their Super League campaign off and running at Huddersfield Giants next weekend.
