Promotion-chasing Wrexham are keen on acquiring Reading star Sam Smith, according to reports.

The Red Dragons, managed by Royals legend Phil Parkinson, are targeting successive promotions from the National League to the Championship.

However, following defeat to Stevenage on Tuesday, the Welsh outfit are sat third and six points behind Wycombe Wanderers in second.

Despite bolstering a forward line consisting of the likes of Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott, Wrexham are reportedly keen on Royals striker Smith before Monday's 11pm deadline, according to Football League World.

Smith has 11 goals to his name so far this season and has hit double-figures in League One for the past four seasons.

Under contract until 2026, it would take a significant fee for Noel Hunt to part with the only senior striker in the squad.

Speaking on exits after Tuesday's defeat at Burton Albion, manager Hunt said: "Every player, to us, is priceless. It’s as simple as that."

Head of Recruitment, Brian Carey, is thought to be the main man for the club in this window, trying to prevent a fire sale of assets which happened last January and working closely with Hunt.

A man synonymous with Wrexham, Carey made over 300 appearances for the club as a defender and has taken on roles such as coach and manager before turning to recruitment.

Michael Craig, Joel Pereira and Andre Garcia are among the players that have been linked with a move away this month.
