Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is set to spend the rest of the season on loan at Las Palmas after his stay at Red Bull Salzburg was cut short.

Bajcetic has opted to join the Spanish side ahead of Porto, who were also keen on snapping up the 20-year-old on a temporary basis.

The Spaniard has endured a difficult time in Austria having been taken on a season-long loan by former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders, who was appointed Salzburg boss in the summer.

There were rumours of dressing room unrest among senior Salzburg players at what they perceived as preferential selection for Bajcetic and Bobby Clark, who joined on a permanent transfer in August from Liverpool.

Bajcetic made 19 appearances for Salzburg although only eight came as a starter, with his most recent outing being a cameo from the bench in Wednesday night’s 4-1 home Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The future of Bajcetic was further called into question when Lijnders was sacked last month after a disappointing run of results.

Real Betis had been linked with an interest in the player earlier in the transfer window but he has now decided to return to his homeland with Las Palmas, who stand 15th in La Liga.

Bajcetic broke into the Liverpool first team during the 2022/23 season but has made just three appearances for the Reds since suffering an adductor injury in March 2023.
