Stephen McCarthy tributes paid after tragic passing of 'hard as nails' young footballer
A GAA club has paid a touching tribute following the tragic passing of one of their young players. Stephen McCarthy passed away peacefully in the South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen after a battle with illness.
He was well known in the Teemore area and played for the club at all levels before taking time out to travel in 2024. The Fermanagh club shared their touching tribute to Stephen on social media after the tragic news emerged.
"Our club is in shock and mourning at the tragic passing of Stephen McCarthy, who proudly represented the club at both youth and adult levels," Teemore stated. "Stephen most recently played for the club in the 2023 season, lining out for the Shamrocks in the Reserve League and Championship.
"A fearless competitor—tough as nails and always willing to put his body on the line—Stephen was a true Teemore man who loved getting stuck in. He would have played in 2024 if not for travel commitments and often spoke of his plans to return in 2025.
"Our deepest condolences go out to Stephen’s family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."
One of his former coaches added to the tributes, remarking: "Had the pleasure of having him play for the reserves, he asked no questions just got on with his job with true Teemore spirit. Rest easy Stevie."
Stephen was a son of the late Darren McCarthy and leaves behind three siblings - Fionan, Colleen and Ryan
Stephen 's funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Teemore at 11 o’clock on Friday morning.
