Steve Borthwick backs England to fulfil 'very high' potential after dramatic win over France
Steve Borthwick declared the ceiling for his England team is “very high” after their dramatic win over France.
England came from six points down with five minutes to go to snatch a 26-25 victory against France at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
The bonus-point win ignites England’s Six Nations hopes, with Borthwick’s side now level on points with leaders France.
And Borthwick believes there is so much more to come from his side after they ended a run of seven defeats in a row against Tier One nations.
“I always remember as player, Clive Woodward would always say: ‘It only takes 30 seconds to score a try’,” said Borthwick.
“I have talked about that with Hilly (Richard Hill) and the team as well. I was really pleased just watching the composure at the end. It’s a team that’s growing.
“We’d all like everything to just suddenly be perfect, a team to suddenly be perfect, [but] that’s not the way teams build.
“The way this team has been building over the past six, eight months, it is a team with a whole lot of potential. The ceiling for this team is very, very high and unfortunately you take some pain along the way when you are building a team.”
Elliot Daly was England’s hero, coming off the bench with minutes to go to score a try in the dying moments.
Before that, England and France had traded blows during a pulsating Test match that Borthwick hopes was celebrated all over the country.
“I am really proud of the players, but I have been proud of them after every game, because they work exceptionally hard,” said Borthwick.
“What’s the difference today? I am delighted for them that they have got a win and I am delighted for the England supporters that they are hopefully now filling up the pubs of south west London having a good time.
“And they are enjoying being in their living rooms, hopefully jumping up and down on their sofas all across England today. I am delighted for them.”
Fly-half Fin Smith kicked the winning conversion for England and the 22-year-old shone on his first start.
The 22-year-old created two tries, including Daly’s winning one, and he was delighted after recovering from a shaky start where he had a kick charged down.
“I felt like a rabbit in the headlights in the first half,” Smith said.
“But I found my feet in the end, and I am delighted with the win more than anything, but this is cool for a first start anyway.
“I think we just really backed ourselves. We knew we couldn’t go into our shells. We had to keep playing and keep moving the ball.
“The French are an awesome outfit and I felt like they let us off the hook in the first half and we felt like momentum had to come to us at some point.”
