Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has claimed it would be 'bad' for the Premier League to have no financial rules.

Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and the Premier League's other 18 sides remain restricted to losses of £105m over a rolling three-year period. However, top-flight clubs are trialling squad cost regulations and top to bottom anchoring in shadow this season before deciding what to do next.

It is a hot topic in the game. Alan Shearer said last week that he would get rid of PSR rules altogether or, at the very least, 'dramatically change' the regulations to make the Premier League even more competitive. The Newcastle legend added that the current rules 'don't sit easy' with him because they are 'not designed for anyone to come in and challenge the big boys' over a sustained period of time.

Although Richard Masters recognised there was a 'difference of opinion' between stakeholders, the Premier League's chief executive stressed not having a rule book at all would be a 'far worse choice' and Parish has echoed those comments.

"How competitive you are in the men's professional game is one way or another linked to revenue if we maintain those rules," the Crystal Palace chairman told the Peter McCormack show. "There's a healthy debate about those rules. Some people want no rules. They think people should be able to spend what they want.

"I think that would be bad because if you look at something like the French league, the only rule they have is, 'Can you afford it?' You have one club [PSG] with unlimited finances running away with it every year and it produces a big mismatch."
