Steven Gerrard has been urged to follow Frank Lampard's blueprint by reigniting his managerial career in England.

Former Rangers boss Gerrard has been lined up for a shock approach by Carlisle United just a week after leaving his £15million-a-year role with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard was axed after 18 turbulent months in charge, leaving the club teetering five points above the relegation zone.

But the Liverpool legend could be handed a quick-fire return to the dugout by League Two bottom boys Carlisle - a remarkable fall from grace from leading Rangers to an unbeaten Premiership triumph in 2021. However, Alan Shearer has urged his ex-England teammate not to turn his nose up at any job and take a leaf out of Lampard's book as the ex-Derby, Everton and Chelsea boss rebuilds his reputation with Coventry City.

He told Betfair: "Steven Gerrard has left Saudi Arabia, and I hope he gets back into management in the UK. He clearly doesn't have to work, but I hope it's not the last we've seen of him or Wayne Rooney.

"I hope someone somewhere gives Gerrard the opportunity to go in and manage just like Frank is doing really well at Coventry now. Frank has taken Coventry from the relegation places really close to the play-offs so I hope, very much like Frank, that Gerrard gets another job somewhere in the game."
