Veteran boss Mark Hughes has made a shock return to management with Carlisle United - pipping Steven Gerrard to the role.

Ex-Rangers gaffer Gerrard emerged as a surprise contender for the bottom-of-the-table League Two side, just a week after leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq. But the Cumbrians have opted for another high-profile appointment, with experienced Hughes returning to the dugout after 18 months out of work.

The 61-year-old has been unemployed since being sacked by fellow League Two side Bradford in October 2023. However, the Manchester United legend will now take on arguably the most challenging job in English football as he attempts to drag Carlisle to EFL safety, replacing sacked Mike Williamson in the hotseat.

Sporting director Rob Clarkson said: “I’m delighted that Mark has agreed to join Carlisle United. His experience and stature in the game speaks for itself. He is someone who will instantly command respect from all staff and players and I am really excited to work with him.

"The players we have here will suit the way he wants to play and I’m sure our fans will really get behind him and the team in our remaining 18 games."
