Steven Schumacher popular fans' choice to be new Plymouth Argyle head coach
There appears to be a lot of support among the Green Army for Steven Schumacher being reappointed as the Plymouth Argyle head coach after the departure of Wayne Rooney.
A lengthy Argyle board meeting on Monday night concluded with the decision to part ways with Rooney, who won just four of his 23 Championship games in charge. Long-serving first team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead the Argyle team for the New Year's Day game against Bristol City at Home Park, but attention among the fans has already turned to who will be the next head coach.
One possibility is 40-year-old Schumacher, who led the Pilgrims to the 2022/23 League One title with 101 points but then left for Championship rivals Stoke City in December 2023 in somewhat acrimonious circumstances.

Schumacher lost his job at Stoke only five games into this season and was replaced by Narcis Pelach, who was subsequently sacked on December 27. The 18th-placed Potters will host bottom-of-the-table Argyle at the Britannia Stadium this Saturday lunchtime.
Many of the Green Army would welcome Schumacher back to Home Park, albeit some still have a few misgivings about the way he left the club last term, judging by the responses to a social media post from Plymouth Live's Argyle reporter Chris Errington asking fans who they would like to replace Rooney.
Many of the replies were along a similar theme. Luke Hodge said: "Schuey - left as he's ambitious, loved his time at Argyle, is a disciplinarian, gets the best out of the players, knows club inside out, lives in city and is best person to give survival a shot although it’s highly unlikely irrespective of who’s at the helm."
Tynan is God commented: "Schuey. Horses for courses, knows the club, knows most of the players and loves the area. Not likely to jump ship again, he’s made his money. Knows how to get the most out of a limited squad."
Jak Ball said: "Without doubt Schuey. The club need a good appointment now more than ever. Schuey doesn’t need to get to know the area, a lot of players, the board and others behind the scenes. He can easily repair any damage done with fans. Never been a more no-brainer man for the job!
Jolly Green Giant declared: "We need someone who, let's be honest, wants to relocate to the south west, and who has Championship experience. Schuey is the obvious replacement and it pains me a little to say it but he's the #1, even if only on a 1.5 year contract to start with."
Just Nik said: "Putting aside the disappointment and anger around the way he left us; the obvious answer is Schuey. He united us as a club and a fanbase, gave us some of our best times and really understood the ethos of Argyle. It's time to kiss and make up and address some unfinished business."
Greenish Hugh commented: "Schuey would get my vote as long as he wants to commit to us long term and realises now the grass wasn't greener elsewhere after all" and Matt Robinson said: "Time for Schumacher to return, put the last 12 months behind both parties and get the plan back on the road."
However, some supporters want Argyle to look elsewhere than Schumacher with Neil Harris, who recently left Millwall, or former long-time Coventry City boss Mark Robins two names regularly mentioned. The latter, however, is the bookies' favourite to take over at Stoke.
Chris Watt said: "Schuey would divide the fanbase and might well walk mid-season for more money again. Seconds never work (look at Luggy). I'd like someone like Neil Harris or Mark Robins. Or could we tempt Sir Gareth Southgate back into management? He's done the Championship before."
Frazer Lloyd-Davies commented: "Mark Robins. He did well at Coventry City, often under difficult circumstances. Would perhaps be difficult to convince him to join, as I suspect he'll attract attention from elsewhere, but someone with a bit of Championship experience ideally."
Alexander Warn declared: "An outside guy, no more old pals act - it's parochial and played out. Although unlikely, I would be sounding out a Robins or Mowbray type" while Martin Clift said: "Neil Harris. Highly experienced at this level."
