Garry Monk says his Cambridge United side must be at their best as they enter a “difficult environment” against Wanderers.

Monk’s side find themselves 23rd in the League One table and eight points adrift as they prepare to take on the Whites.

The U’s have lost five successive matches, with their last victory coming against Shrewsbury on December 7.

“I am sure (the fans) are going to travel in their numbers this weekend. We are determined, we have got to try and repay that support,” Monk told the club channels.

“We have been trying to do that and had a few good away days this season. It hasn’t been enough but there have been a few good ones, showing what we are capable of.

“It is great when you can go over at the end, you’ve had the kind of performance and got the points. I think there is no better feeling. We need to work really hard, it is going to be a really hard game for us.

“Everyone talks about Bolton, maybe a bit indifferent, but they are still a top quality side and a difficult environment to go and play in. We have to be at 100 (per cent) to try and get that result.”

There was nothing to separate the sides at the Abbey Stadium earlier in the season, despite Cambridge playing most of the second half with 10 men.

“We want to go and perform and the game we had earlier with them was a really good performance, considering we were down to 10 men for quite a chunk of that second half,” the head coach added.

“To show the character to come back and level it up through SK (Sullay Kaikai)… People always ask in this situation about confidence and belief but that is what I always come back with.

“It has been more about frustration rather than being despondent. We haven’t performed in a despondent way where we are not connected, no spirit.

“It has more been about the frustration of ‘that’s got our of our hands’ where we were in control and haven’t done better with the situation we have got ourselves into.

“The opportunities, defending our box, it has only been moments. That is how we feel, it is not like we have not been under siege game in, game out.

“But we have got a determined group, I have said that from the start and I don’t see any different. We will be ready for this game at the weekend.”
