On his return to the technical area for the first time since last April, here was a crash course in the weird and wonderful world of West Ham United for Graham Potter.

After taking just one training session, Potter experienced the new-manager bounce and then a late collapse in the space of 96 mad minutes to underline why he will require patience repairing the damage of Julen Lopetegui’s tenure.

Aston Villa’s 150th anniversary match was an unpredictable roller coaster and, in their vintage black kit, they produced a spirited late response to ruin Potter’s return.

Villa were in party mood but their celebrations were threatening to fall flat until Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers finally broke the resistance of their visitors with two goals in five minutes.

For around an hour, West Ham were impressive and delivered a disciplined, well-organised performance which was far removed from the mess under Lopetegui.

If Potter can deliver his messages so quickly, after succeeding the dismissed Spaniard on Thursday, there is much encouragement for the months ahead. Yet the old frailties did surface as time began to tick away and Villa capitalised to move into the FA Cup fourth round for only the second time in nine years.

‘You can’t replicate that feeling in the stomach of conceding a goal’

Potter admitted he was satisfied enough, though his return was tarnished by a hamstring injury for Niclas Füllkrug and controversy after Villa were awarded a contentious corner which led to Onana’s equaliser.

“The emotion tonight was one of excitement, we’ve had 6,500 supporters here and the performance gave me encouragement,” he said. “The players did what we asked them to do and you can’t replicate that feeling in the stomach of conceding a goal.

“It was a team performance that was really positive, though we’re obviously disappointed to be out of the Cup.

“The response from our preparation time and the application was really positive but it wasn’t to be.”

Potter’s Chelsea tenure ended last year after defeat by Villa, and this was a rare success in the Cup for the home team. Before last night, Villa had lost seven consecutive third-round matches until beating Middlesbrough at this stage last season.

In Unai Emery’s first campaign he suffered arguably his lowest moment with a home defeat by Stevenage, then of League Two, in 2023. Yet they were rewarded for their patience here and Emery is hoping to go deeper in the competition this time around.

“The players showed our wishes to do something in the competition,” he said. “Of course it is very important which team we will face next. Now we focus, because we are in three competitions and we want to get something in the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

“It was very important with it being the 150th anniversary and the supporters are proud of our history.”

West Ham dominant in first half as Villa laboured

Emery cannot have envisaged this result after the first-half performance, which was poor from Villa. A change of manager can so often spark an upturn in fortunes and energise underwhelming players, and Potter witnessed a dominant display.

Lucas Paquetá had already driven a powerful shot narrowly wide after just 41 seconds before breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute. Crysencio Summerville broke from near the halfway line to advance towards the Villa penalty area and present Paquetá with a simple side-footed finish.

Potter celebrated like a man who has clearly missed these big occasions. Even the departure of Füllkrug, who was helped off the field in some discomfort, did not damage the verve of the visitors.

Villa were struggling to find any fluidity and the jeers at half-time were expected. The home team had failed to register a single shot. Stars from decades gone by appeared at half-time as part of the anniversary celebrations, and must have been itching to get on to the pitch.

Yet Villa did finally improve. Youri Tielemans cracked a shot wide and Ian Maatsen made West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski work from close range.

The equaliser came 19 minutes from time, and was tinged with controversy. West Ham were arguing that a corner should never have been awarded but, after Leon Bailey’s delivery, Onana converted from two yards, Fabianski having spilt another Maatsen shot.

Suddenly the visitors were nervous and Villa sensed it. The second goal came in the 76th minute with Rogers directing Ollie Watkins’s cross into the net.

Villa were now rampant, with substitute Jacob Ramsey striking the upright from 22 yards, although six minutes of added time ramped up the tension and the hosts required Rogers to block a goal-bound shot from substitute Danny Ings.

Yet West Ham never managed to threaten Robin Olsen in the Villa goal and Potter’s debut ended in an early exit from the Cup.

Villa must have been wary of the new-manager bounce and will have to do it all over again next week. Up next on Wednesday night it is Everton and David Moyes in the Premier League.

New man in charge for West Ham ahead of Aston Villa FA Cup tie

West Ham head to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup tonight with a new manager. After weeks and weeks of speculation, Julen Lopetegui has gone and former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is in. Heavy back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City has caused West Ham, who sit in 14^th in the Premier League, to make a change and Potter is the man chosen to replace Lopetegui.

Potter explained in his first press conference as the new West Ham manager why he felt this was the right job to take.

“[I am] very excited, very proud day to be head coach of this amazing club,” said Potter. “It is a big tradition, big history, big expectation. A big challenge. It is a bit like Christmas for the adults. Excited, not the best of sleeps last night just from excitement. Looking forward to meeting the players, meeting our supporters and getting going.”

“It has been 20 months of a good rest, a good break. In that time you speak to lots of people, lots of conversations with different owners and directors. It was important that I chose the right option for me at the right time. As soon as I spoke to this club, it felt right for me.

“When you have had lots of time to think, sometimes it is a feeling in you. The board’s ambition, their trust and belief in me, looking at the playing squad and the academy. It is a massive club but it is a family club. I like that connection, that sense of fighting together.”

Potter’s opposite number tonight, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, believes the new West Ham boss will do a good job.

“West Ham have very good players. It is a good club,” he said. “It is not a good news when they are changing one coach. But of course, now the opportunity is for him.

“We are going to respect West Ham, we are going to respect him. [Graham] Potter was successful when he was coaching before here in England. He has experiences and I think he is going to do good work.”

Aston Villa, who are currently eighth in the Premier League, will be without their captain John McGinn tonight, who went off went a hamstring injury in their win over Leicester.

Tonight is the first time these sides have met in the FA Cup since March 1980, with West Ham winning 1-0 in the quarter-finals on their way to winning the trophy. West Ham’s FA Cup campaign was ended at this stage last season after losing to Bristol City whilst Aston Villa beat Middlesbrough 1-0. Back in August Aston Villa beat West Ham 2-1 in the league.
