Ben Wilmot is heading from Fratton Park to hospital after an injury-time challenge left him in serious pain.

Wilmot was in the thick of the drama as Stoke City lost 3-1 at Portsmouth; at fault for the second goal, on the scoresheet himself at the other end and then being hurt by a full-blooded Terry Devlin tackle in injury time.

The 25-year-old centre-back kicked through Devlin's studs as the Pompey man slid in, with ref Josh Smith subsequently booking both Wouter Burger and Viktor Johansson for dissent.

Mark Robins was already missing eight players and Wilmot will now be assessed ahead of a crunch home match against Gary Rowett's Oxford United on Saturday (12.30pm).

The manager said: "He's in pain, a lot of pain. He'll be going for an X-ray while we're down here."

He added: "Absolutely (it would be a blow to be without Wilmot). We pick up injuries all the time. When you're playing in games like that and as often as you are doing you're going to get injuries, there is no getting away from it."

Ben Gibson, Lynden Gooch, Sol Sidibe, Sam Gallagher, Million Manhoef, Jordan Thompson and Ben Pearson have been out injured for Stoke while Bosun Lawal is only now returning to fitness.

Robins has called back Nathan Lowe and Lewis Baker from loans to bolster the squad while bringing in Josh Wilson-Esbrand on loan from Manchester City.

"We've just got to keep going," he said. "There have been one or two who have had a bit of a breather. We'll get on the bus tonight, recovery properly and get back in."
