Stoke City pick up £115k bonus as son of England star wooed by United States
Stoke City pocketed a cheque for £115,000 by beating a team above them in the league pyramid away in the FA Cup for the first time since the Second World War.
Stoke have played 341 FA Cup ties over the years, including 160 away from home (it’s 20 at a neutral venue and 161, soon to be 162 at home) and they’ve won 35 on the road but almost all of those have been against sides below them in the table or in a lower division.
Incredibly, Saturday's extra-time win at Sunderland was the first time they have pulled off this trick since February 18, 1928 when Charlie Wilson scored the winner for a Stoke side sitting sixth in Division Two at second-placed Manchester City.

That is the only other occasion it has happened since Stoke became Stoke City following Stoke-on-Trent being granted city status in 1925 so well done to Mark Robins for entering the history books in the first full week of life at the club.
Thanks too to Stoke fan Andy Slee for going back through 100 years of mostly-disappointing cup ties to check the figures – and thanks to his family for not complaining as he did it.
Sunderland received £25,000 as third round losers. The winner of Stoke’s fourth round tie against Cardiff will get £120,000 and both teams will get a bonus on top of that if the game is selected for live coverage on BBC, ITV or S4C. Selections are normally made within a week of the draw.
Stoke in Youth Cup action
Stoke are in FA Youth Cup action at the bet365 Stadium against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night (7pm). Admission is free.
Dave Hibbert’s junior Potters won 3-0 at St George’s Park against Woking in round three while Albion won 6-4 at Harrogate Town after extra-time.
This is a talented bunch for Hibbert, with players including Jaden Dixon, Freddie Anderson and Sol Sidibe as well as centre-half Pijus Otegbayo, who joined from Stockport County in October.
Meanwhile, winger Tom Midwood, aged 14, has won Stoke’s Broxap Outstanding Academy Achievement award for December. He was summoned to an England age group identification programme while chipping in with three goals and three assists in the Premier League Floodlit Cup.
Under-15s coach Carlton Reid said: “Tom is an exciting winger who creates match-winning moments for himself and the team through his one-vs-one ability.
“It is deserved recognition for Tom that he was invited to England’s Talent ID camp last month, and we’re sure with continued hard work and application that further recognition and opportunities will come his way.”
Tug of love for Freddie Anderson
Stoke centre-half Freddie Anderson, the son of Viv Anderson, the first black footballer to win a full England cap, has been called up for a United States under-20s training camp in Florida.
Anderson, aged 18, qualifies for the US through his mum. He has captained Ryan Shawcross’s Stoke under-21s side this season and been on standby for England under-20s when they were managed by now-Stoke assistant Paul Nevin.
He will head to West Palm Beach in preparation for the under-20s World Cup in Chile later this year and will spend a day training with Mauricio Pochettino’s senior squad.
Anderson Sr – who watches all of Freddie’s matches, including his first team debut at Carlisle in the Carabao Cup back in August – played alongside Mark Robins at Man Utd.
New date for Women’s FA Cup
Stoke City Women’s cup clash with Leicester City has been rearranged for Wednesday, January 15 (7.45pm) at Meadow Lane.
The fourth round tie should have taken place on Sunday but was postponed due to a frozen pitch. Tickets purchased for the original date remain valid. Admission is £10 for adults, £6 for over-65s and under-22s and £4 for under-18s. Under-8s get in free.
