Stoke City conceded two embarrassing goals against 10-men Sheffield Wednesday to pile pressure on head coach Narcis Pelach.

Stoke were playing against 10 men for more than half of a dramatic game at Hillsborough but they also missed a penalty through Tom Cannon and had other big claims for a penalty turned down by referee Sam Allison.

But they couldn’t make home keeper James Beadle sweat enough and couldn’t defend two low crosses from their left in the second half that means they are now eight without a win and a furious away end voiced dissent.

Josh Windass tapped in the first from a Yan Valery centre that somehow squirmed through Stoke bodies while Callum Patterson sealed it from close range from a Shea Charles ball over. The visiting fans, some of whom sang about Steven Schumacher, left no one in doubt about their mood.

Bernard could have had no complaints when his own name was taken just after the half-hour mark, hauling Cannon back again after completely messing up his control just inside the Wednesday half. Stoke fans thought that could have been a red card on its own. Cannon was away and into space, even if he was far from to goal. But 10 minutes later, he was on his way. Cannon had got past him again and Bernard resorted to pretty much a rugby tackle to haul him back. Remarkably, he was applauded off by the home fans.

But early in the second half Wednesday were ahead. Bannan’s excellent pass sent Yan Valery to the by-line and his low cross somehow evaded Stoke defenders to be ticked home by Windass.

Stoke thought they were immediately level but Cannon had a header miraculously saved by James Beadle at close range, Burger couldn’t get to the rebound and ref Allison somehow gave a free-kick to Wednesday rather than penalty to Stoke when Koumas was fouled in the follow-up by Charles, who was already on a yellow card. The home stands were laughing loudly when Allison didn’t give a penalty to Stoke when Bannan had dived and handballed a cross from the left. The stadium was in disbelief.

But Burger couldn’t make a tackle and Gibson couldn’t stop a low cross coming in from the left getting to Patterson, who got the wrong side of Wilmot to tap home.

And when Stoke did get their penalty in the end when Beadle was punished for climbing over Gallagher – but the keeper saved Cannon’s shot towards the bottom corner. When Gooch was then kicked in the chops by Bannan, the appeal for another penalty was muted. Game over.

Here are the player ratings from Hillsborough:

Johansson: Difficult afternoon due to the wind and stayed on his line more than usual in open play. Kicking himself for not dealing with opener. 5

Tchamadeu: Back at right wing-back and a couple of through balls hung in the wind nicely for Stoke’s forwards. 6

Bocat: Defended well in the first half but couldn’t stop the cross for the opener. 5.5

Wilmot: Kicking himself for not being able to defend either of the low crosses that put Wednesday in command. 5

Rose: One brave diving header towards his own goal to take responsibility with a swirling cross. 6

Gibson: Couldn’t make the all-important blocks to low crosses that should have been much more comfortably dealt with. 5

Seko: Some high energy in the first half in particular. 5,5

Burger: More aggressive than previously until a very soft attempt at a tackle before Wednesday’s second. 5

Moran: Helped set a different tone in the first half with some useful pressing but couldn’t translate that into big chances. 5.5

Koumas: Runs in behind into the wind were threatening in first half but couldn’t make Beadle work. 6

Cannon: Caused problems for Di’Shon Bernard with his runs behind but couldn’t make any count, partly due to fouls. Close range header saved by Beadle. Penalty saved. 5.5
