Stoke City are believed to have rejected a late bid for Wouter Burger from FC Midtjylland.

Reports in Denmark and the Netherlands claim that Midtjylland were keen on landing the 23-year-old midfielder as deadline day heads towards a climax this evening, but Stoke refused to let a starting player go without having the necessary time to secure a replacement.

Burger joined Stoke from FC Basel in the summer of 2023 and he has made 72 appearances for the club already, including 31 this season - and he has played in all six games under new manager Mark Robins, either alongside Lewis Baker, Tatsuki Seko or Andrew Moran. The former Netherlands youth international is under contract until 2027.

Tipsbladet report: "Tipsbladet, in collaboration with Voetbal International, can reveal that the Midtjylland team was extremely close to presenting the Dutch midfielder Wouter Burger, but ultimately his club Stoke called off the deal because they could not find a replacement for him.

"This leaves FC Midtjylland in a situation where they now have to look elsewhere in search of a replacement for Emiliano Martinez, who has just been sold for a huge sum to Palmeiras. There are only a few hours left in the Danish transfer window."
