Manchester United are in need of another squad rebuild.

Ruben Amorim has come into the club and is beginning to implement his style and ideas. But results have not yet been forthcoming and the Reds are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Amorim is wedded to a 3-4-3 shape but doesn't quite have all the tools needed to play it successfully, with injuries not helping given Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are two who could slot seamlessly into that set-up. It means United need to act in the market but financial constraints mean big money moves are unlikely with the club needing to sell to buy having splashed the cash in recent windows.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to cut costs, free transfers would be one option that United chief would welcome and with the January transfer window now open there is a chance for those playing overseas to agree summer moves. And there are several who could fit the bill for Amorim and United.

Angel Gomes

A product of United's youth system, Gomes has been heavily linked with the prospect of a return to Old Trafford in recent months. He left the club in 2020 after failing to agree a new contract and has since enjoyed four-and-a-half successful years at Lille.

However, the midfielder's contract at the French club is up at the end of the season, and now that he has entered the final six months of that deal, he is free to agree a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club ahead of the summer.

Comfortable operating as a No.8 and roaming between both boxes, the England international is a nimble operator in midfield and is only 24, meaning his best is still to come. With United still having teething issues in midfield, signing Gomes on a free could be an option worth considering at the very least.

Alphonso Davies

Wing-backs are central to Amorim's 3-4-3 formation and there is no doubt that area of the team needs upgrading, particularly on the left. Shaw is unreliable because of his injury woes and Tyrell Malacia is not a wing-back.

With Amad a strong candidate to make the right-wing back role his own, United need to strike the ideal balance by finding a more defensive-minded option on the left. Davies, as much as he likes to attack, is a left-back by trade.

The Canada international is quick, powerful and incredibly athletic, making him a suitable option for a wing-back role. However, United would have their work cut out attempting to convince the 24-year-old to move to Old Trafford.

Bayern want to keep him beyond his contract running out at the end of this season, and Spanish giant Real Madrid have been linked with his signature consistently in recent months. They are, with respect, a much more attractive option than United are right now.

Jonathan David

Fellow Canada international David is a player that has been linked with United on a handful occasions in recent years. Signed from Belgian club Gent in 2020, the striker has scored 101 goals in 209 games for Lille.

Of those 101 goals, the 24-year-old has plundered 17 of them in 26 games this season, meaning he has scored 43 times for the French club since the beginning of last term. As well as being a seasoned goalscorer, the striker, who is not short of speed, is also capable of turning provider, creating five goals so far this term.

Out-of-contract in the summer, the French club will be doing everything possible to convince him to stay and avoid the risk of losing him for free. Clubs right across the globe are likely to be linked with him if Lille are unable to tie him down to a fresh deal.

United are in desperate need of goals and David has developed a habit for scoring them. His contract situation is worthy of watching.
